Bought may first golf gti mk5 today, it's on a 05reg. I drove it home, bout 45miles and the exhaust system light has come on, what should I do? Have I been ripped off??
I would suggest you scan it and see what code it throws then go from there.
So I have to go to a garage to scan it?? Is it common for them to come on?
It's fairly common, the light coming on signifies that a fault has been registered in the ecu, scanning will tell you what triggered it, then with that info you can look into the cure.
Depending on your location you can get free scans, failing that get yourself a cheap scanner on ebay.
Live in North Yorkshire. How do I find out if I can get a free scan?? Thanks for replying!
ebay may be cheaper, you'd need a garage due to being over here and most will charge.
Thank you. What do I need to search on eBay? Sorry to be a pain.
This is just about the cheapest.
Btw ask anything that's what forums are for.
Thanks for the link will go from there!!
Scaned my golf gti mk5 and fault codes P0139 and P0141 showed up, anyone know if this is serious??
Is the exhaust leaking? Get someone to block the end of the tailpipe while it's running and listen for a hiss.
Start by clearing the codes, then drive it until the light returns.
Oil in the intake can cause the issue, if it's clean you might just need a new front o2 sensor.
Avoid driving with the light on as the catalytic converter can be damaged.
Cars in the garage tomorrow so will hopefully get to the bottom of it. Couldn't hear a leak in the exhaust, need a service anyhow.
Been quoted £110 for a genuine O2 sensor anybody know of any cheaper?? Cheers
Euro car parts.
^^ that's not a bad price. the genuine sensor kits are nice.
ebay might have them too.
definitely purchase online. local dealer wanted $260.00 US (+ tax). i found online from a vw dealership in a different state for 160.00 (shipped).
