Ok since this has come up so many times. I decided to copy the manual word for word and post it.

The following is from the Owners Manual book 3.2 Tip and Advice, page 11.

Driving and protecting the environment

Break-in Period

Breaking in a new engine

The engine need to be carefully broken in during the first 1000 miles (1500km)

For the first 600 miles (1000km)

-- Do not drive faster than 3/4 of the top speed shown on the speedometer.

-- Do not use full throttle.

-- Avoid high engine speeds.

-- Do not tow a trailer.

From 600 to 1000 miles (1000 to 1500km)

-- Speeds can be gradually increased to the maximum vehicle speed or maximum permissible engine speed (rpm).

During the first few hours driving, the engine's internal friction is higher than it will be later when all the moving parts have been broken in.

For the sake of the environment
If the engine is broken in gently, the life of the engine will be increased and its oil consumption reduced.

This was take from the 2007 VW Rabbit owners manual. If you have more questions refer to your owners manual or if it's not stated above post a question.

Thanks
