2007 Rabbit... Is this a deal?

Hello all, I am new to this forum, what a great place for VW information!

I am currently an international student at the States and just managed to get my driving license, so I am looking to purchase my very first vehicle (in my life ).

Since I am looking for a new vehicle, the GTI is out of my budget ( they look so sick! I wish I could get 'em). Therefore I have had my eyes on the VW Rabbit for a while.

I went to the VW dealership and saw this Uni Black Rabbit and fell in love with it. It is a 4-door 2007 VW Rabbit with Auto Transmission, Sunroof-optioned and 6 in dash cd w/ 10 speakers. After a week of negotiation the final offer they gave me is $19350 USD. Since we don't have sales tax here in Oregon the only other cost I have to pay is the license fee which is around $200.

I have thought about the 2008 Rabbit S, but I'm not sure if the 20 hp and 7 torque could justify me paying the extra (I won't be able to have a sunroof then) since I still consider myself an amateur driver and probably won't appreciate or notice those.

What do you guys think? Did I manage to get an okay deal? Could I have done better? I still have around a couple days to decide before I make the final purchase. My other option is a 2007 Mazda3 hatchback with Leather Seats, sunroof, and bose audio system (Mazda dealer said they are willing to do around 19k for it), but I just feel the VW ... drives better. I am paying with cash for your information.

    Thanks alot!

    Hey Lucan,

If the car is new, the easiest way to tell if you are getting a decent deal is to take a look at kbb.com or edmunds.com and configure your car with all of the options. Look at the invoice price, and try to negotiate based on that. I have heard all different stories, but anywhere from invoice to $500 over seems like a good deal to me. I believe they definitely have more room to work with leftover 2007s.

If the Rabbit is used, I don't believe edmunds or kbb really have any figures on these vehicles. I would say configure it as new and see how much of a discount you are getting off of a new price (you might be better off with a new 2008 if they won't discount it much). From what I have seen, except for unique situations, the resale on these have been rather high because there does not seem to be a glut of them on the market - so you might be better off looking at new.

As for a four door for $19,350 - I know for a fact that you can do better than that on a new four door 2008, just don't choose all of the options. If you can wait, have the dealer order or locate one for you that doesn't have any options except automatic - and you would come in well below the price of the 2007.

Good luck and let us know how this ends up for you.

Thank Oldmike and Tibimakai all for the input.

I think I am going to strike a deal with the dealer at 19350 (it includes destination and other misc fees).

I did contemplated with the idea of a 2008 but I am really growing thin on patience and would appreciate having a sunroof.

I guess I will miss the extra horsepower but nonetheless make it inside to the VDUB Family!

If everything goes well I will have the car by Tuesday, will keep you guys updated.

Haha, I am so excited right now!

Good luck. I just test drove a tiptronic 4 door 2007 over the weekend and thought that it had pretty good pickup for a 150 hp automatic (I'm waiting for a manual, but was interested in how the 6 speed automatic felt). I don't think you will miss the extra horsepower (from what I have read here), and if you want the sunroof it is probably a pretty good trade off.

Not sure that is a good deal man. I bought my White 2008 4-Door with sunroof for 18950 out the door. They even waived all the dealer fees. Where are you buying it in Portland? I got mine from Armstrong VW in Gladstone.

They have a black 2007 and if you finance through them they will give it to you for 18k out the door. It has no options, but it's a 4-door black.

if you do happend to go there, tell the salesman (look for Chad Utah), that Andrei, the guy that bought the white 2008 sent you.

The first thing he will do is laugh.

Good luck, and before you purchase, look at Armstrong VW.

    Ahh... your's an automatic?!

Hmmm this is very interesting. I am currently at Eugene and I won't be anywhere near Portland in the near future... But I will definitely ask a quote over the night.

Sigh I even put down a $500 deposit too for the Rabbit.

my dealer had such a huge markup on my rabbit...

    '07 4 door with auto - used w/8800 miles... they wanted $19950

I laughed at them for that price. In the end I got it for $15500 :-D

Yup, a 2008 4-Door Automatic with Sunroof. Paid 18950 OTD.

I think they still have a 2007 4-Door Automatic Black with no options. I was offered 18,000 OTD, which is 700 below invoice. I say go for it. We even qualified for 1% APR for 36 mo. but ended up going with the '08.

    Good luck,

And ask for Chad Utah at Armstrong VW in Gladstone.
