    Re: 2012 CC oil consumption

Letter to VW about my 12 GTI burning oil.

We completed the consumption test this week. Apparently, we are now only consuming a .5 quarts of oil per thousand miles vs .67 in the previous test. Although, they reiterated that this is within specs, I still believe that this spec and its perimeters were determined in a unilateral process that was never disclosed to us except that we should read the owner's manual where it is hidden in a several hundred page document as part of the buying process. I am positive that has a take up rate of about .05% rate by a buyer before they sign a contract.

It also is contradictory to your own servicing standards of oil changes every 10k which I was decided was too long and went to a standard of every 5-7.5k miles at my own expense until this issue first came up over a year ago and I ended up with no oil in the engine and had to shut it down which led to the first consumption test.

I understand Turbo engines burn some oil but for an engine to burn close to over a quart and a half or more of synthetic oil between a 3k interval seems to be an underhanded and totally contradictory presentation of the maintenance expectations of the car. I have owned Volvo's and Subaru's with turbo's and have had oil consumption issues only after the cars reached over 100k miles and even then the rate was of burn was less than 1quart per 1k miles.

It is a shame because i absolutely love the GTI but leave the experience with a real bad taste in my mouth and wonder if I should trade the car before the power train warranty runs out or pray that it does not get worse and gut it out. This experience has actually impacted my newest car purchase. I decided to buy a Lexus NX F Sport turbo 4 last month instead of a Macan, Q5, or Toureg. Reliability and integrity were the major factors in my decision.
