Starting Problems on a 77 Fuel Injected

I'm trying to get my VW bug to fire again. I got it a month ago. Its not in great shape. But when i put a battery in it, and put some starter fluid in the throttle body, it would at least fire. Then I went to pressure wash it to clean it up and it wouldnt fire anymore. I popped off the distributor cap to let it dry up for a week. Still nothing. I tested the coil for spark and i'm not getting any, but got a new one, just because it was $12. Where should I start? Seems like a disconnected wire or something somewhere, but which should I start tracing, and is there a good way to bypass each wire, to test if it should work? which wires could i check for power?
