Hello all! Life as a MK-I Rabbit owner has been an adventure to say the least. The last two people who owned my 1981 Rabbit did a lot of work on it themselves and it was abundantly clear they did not know what they were doing.
Long story short- They replaced the 4 speed transmission with a 5 speed transmission without swapping out all the linkage as well. This left me with no reverse, a situation I would like to remedy.
But I need some linkage for a 5 speed from a Rabbit truck or car. Apparently any 5 speed manual VW from around that time may help. If anyone here knows what I am talking about and can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
Make sure that you have the proper linkage kits.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee and Cars all have in common?
They all Start with good GROUNDS.
Replace all of them that you can, 99 percent of flakiness will disappear.
92, 93 Cabriolet.... 89, and 90 are Deceased.
And don`t even bother buying it used, new "rebuild" kits are cheap and will keep you going for a long time.

The bushing kit that is included will rebuild some of the rods on the transmission.
I can`t tell you if you also need the relay shaft and rod, but I doubt it.
Thank you all! After I posted this the website suggested additional posts that were similar. I contacted a Rabbit shop on the east coast and they had the inexpensive kits available but only for the "wear parts". The VW Parts Place had the two connecting rods/shifting arms that are different from the 4 to 5 speed. That should do the trick, right? Guess I'll know after they get here Wednesday! The Rabbit shop on the east coast also sent me diagrams of the 4 and 5 speed setups which I thought were helpful. All in all I just wanted to say thanks for the tips and advice, can't wait to get my rabbit back on the road!
