So, I tried to start the Rabbit the other morning and it was a little cooler outside than the last couple days, and I noticed it started a little harder than normal. I pulled the choke lever or the fast idle and it did nothing. When pulling the lever at any time shouldn't it change the rpm's? I checked the linkage and had a friend pull the lever while I watched the cable pull some sort of arm on the injection pump. The cable did actuate this arm but yet nothing happened to the pitch of the idle.
Any ideas on what's happening here?
Thanks in advance
No, that is not a choke. That advances the injectors by 5 degrees mechanically. If your car is getting hard to start, then it is time you changed out all your glow plugs. As that is a sign that one or 2 or 3 of them aren't working correctly and when the 4th one goes....talk about hard to start.... Always carry a spare glow plug in your glove box as well as the 2 wrenches it takes to change one, that way you never get stranded....

Ok Great. I'm still learning the site and can't find a tutorial on changing the glow plugs. Any help there too?
Lastly, should the timing advance help during cold starts at all? Only if the glow plugs are good?
The CS assist with the starting of he car when it is cold, and after the car starts to warm up, you can push it back.
To change the glow plugs, remove the bus par off of them with the Going from memory as it has been a good while since I had to do it.
8mm I think on top, and a 12 or 13mm deep well on the base after the bus bar is removed. I am thinking that you have to remove the injector lines to get the number 1 and 2 plugs out.

You are right, Briano, you do have to remove the injector lines to get all except #4 out. #3 is possibly doable, but since you're going to have the injector lines off anyway, just wait and do them all after you've removed the lines. It makes life a lot easier. Though I will say, keep a good grip on your wrenches when removing the #1 and #2 glow plugs, or you'll spend a good amount of time trying to chase it out from behind the injector pump to fall onto the floor...
It seems almost always that the glow plug that needs replaced is the one you cant get to easily. So do them all with a quality fast start type and be done with it.
