So, this has been nagging me for a while. When I listen to my engine at idle with the hood up, I detect a "belt" noise of some sort. Its kind of like a "rubbing noise" or a shhhh....shhhh.....shhh......shhhh noise. I am wondering if its from my timing belt or my alt belt. What is it likely from?
History- Ive had issues with belt changes and my injection pump before where I have to take a crow bar and hold tension on the pump and tighten it down in order to get my timing belt to ride in the center. As it is now, the belt rides center everywhere but on the crankshaft pulley where it rides flush up against the pully- could this be the source and if so should I worry? could it be a bad bearing and if so, which ones are prone to wearing out?
I believe the same!! at around 90 degrees the engine makes a shhh - shh or whoosh - whoosh type sound - almost as if something is rotating or plunging and then it stops..... did you ever find an answer?
Just as a point to remember.
Many people have a bad habit of over-tightening belt.
This is critical for the timing belt.
Not only will you damage and reduce the life of the belt but you will also damage shaft bearings and shafts.
Over-tightening the timing belt is one reason why belt don't run in the center of the pulley.
Also it is the primary cause of the Injector shaft seal going bad and leaking diesel.
Yeah don`t over tighten the IP. Also if the belt doesnt ride in the center for some other reason, it's probably ok as long as it doesnt hang over the edge of the pulleys. Make sure the belt isnt touching any of the plastic lower housing, or the metal upper housing.
I think it's something else though, maybe a loose injector, corrosion on the clutch plate barely rubbing, or low oil pressure getting to the cam bearings - which I had and which made a similar sound.
Could be inside the AC compressor clutch or even the alternator.
Probably all sorts of things but i`d check out all the covers on the timing belt first.
