i am a newb but have done alot of reading on your site,very informative.i have an 84 rabbit diesel that i bought with no head on it,there were 3 in the trunk,2 were cracked one was like new,had it pressure tested and checked for level,was ok.
my prblem is i dont know what gasket was on it?
what is the specs for measuring piston pop out to know what gasket?
In the Bentley and or Haynes, you have to measure the distance that all the pistons raise above the block face. Then you take the highest then use the chart to get the gasket that is proper. probably a 3 or 4 notch will suffice.

Replace all of them that you can, 99 percent of flakiness will disappear.
92, 93 Cabriolet.... 89, and 90 are Deceased.
