I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my Rabbit. It's a 1980, with the 1.6L SOHC Engine. The engine will turn over, but it won't fire. If I spray starting fluid into the injection manifold, the engine will start right up and run for 30 seconds to a minute, but dies the moment the starting fluid is burned up. The gas doesn't quite smell right, and the Rabbit has only been sitting for 3-4 weeks as of today. My first thought was fuel pump, but it's pumping and there is pressure in the lines. The second thought was fuel injectors, but if the injectors were fouled or clogged the engine wouldn't even fire with starting fluid, right? I've been told it might be the pressure regulator. I unfortunately don't really have any specialty tools, so I can't test the PSI in the fuel system. I'm completely lost with this vehicle, I'm not mechanically inclined, and I've never worked on a fuel injected vehicle before. Anyone have any advice, possibilities, or educated guesses?
You have a CIS engine and I am not great on those. I can however direct you to www.cabby-info.com as well as http://reflectionsandshadows.com/a1-tech/ where the is more information.
I would think you have varnish in the fuel distributor.. Others will be along that are more CIS savey than I.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee and Cars all have in common?
