I am a new member of the VWOC. I inherited a 1972 Super Beetle. It had been sitting for some time without any maintenance. I desperately want to repair it and have the ability to do it myself, but am not sure where to start. Can someone recommend a good repair/restore/rebuild guide for a bumper to bumper restore? Thanks!!
I am also restoring a 1972 Super that sat for 10-15 years.....
I highly reccommend getting a copy of the "official service manual" by
Robert Bentley ISBN 0-8376-0096-0 COPYRIGHT 1979 by Volkswagon
of America....you might find it in a used books store, or maybe at your
local VW service center....ask for VWoA part number LPV 997 109
I also have a copy of the classic "How to Keep Your Volkswagon Alive"
by John Muir copyright 1974 ISBN 0-012528-001...look for it in a used
books store....or maybe you can write to the author at the following
address:
John Muir Publications
P O Box 613
Santa Fe, New Mexico
87501
I don't know if the above address is still valid, or even if John Muir
is still with us, but it's worth a try....
good luck & let us know how it goes...
Tom
Thanks! I'll check those out! How is your restoration going?
so far it's going great....after sitting for 10-15 years it started up
after I cleaned out the crud in the carburetor....I did adjust the valves
& static timed it per the book, so I'm certain that helped a lot...
still need to get a carb rebuild kit from J C Whitney to cure some
issues with the accelerator pump, new plug wires to replace ones
chewed up by chipmonks ( I live in the mountains ), and a new
battery of course....
already adjusted & bled the brakes...
hope to have it road worthy by end of month...
Tom
