I checked the timing on my rabbit last night and the previous owner had it way off. Fixed that and it started and runs for a little bit then dies. I held it wide open thinking maybe it wasn't getting fuel only to find it flooded it. Went out this morning and put in new ngk plugs. After it dried out that is. Started it and I pulled a vacuum line and it idled a lot better but still dies and I pulled the plugs no flooding. I also adjusted the ignition timing while it ran and gained a few rpms. But I am wondering why it keeps dieing. If you open the throttle while it runs it might work for a few seconds and die as soon as it gets some warmth. Do I have a wur problem?
fresh gas, no vacuum leaks. Replace any and all vacuum hoses if not already. Dont know what year you have...fuel injection? good injectors and "O" rings. Good fuel filter.
Only takes 3 things for a gas engine to run. Fuel, air, ignition. But they all have to be there at the right time. How is the compression? One or two real low cylinders makes them not want to run right. just some thoughts from Oregon today.

Thanks rich. After I flooded it last night I knew I didn't have a bad fuel distributor. I haven't checked the compression but it doesn't smoke at all. I can't find any vacuum leaks. Although it acts like its starving for air. When it dies the plugs arent wet. It will fog the cylinders with the wot swith though. I got off work at 2:00 got to bed at around 8:00am and back to work at 4:30 can't wait to get home and figure out my $600 Rabbit.
I forgot to mention its an 84 convertible. The last guy has some botched up wiring. What kind of tranny fluid do you guys use in a 5 speed? I wonder if the last guy messed with the idle/fuel screw on the flapper lever. The plug is missing from the airbox. Someone tried to make this a racecar. Its got a header and a euro shift link kit. The cam looked stock.

When I'm not on here I'm on cabby-info. I have a manual on the way also. I hate not having a service manual.
Cabby-info also doesn't list where to get an aftermarket rear window frame. Maybe I'll just have to buy an oem or mt makes one but it's 250.
Rear window frames can be had at www.vwvortex.com thesamba.com ebay classifieds.
