I need just a bit more power...

My one goal with my '07 Rabbit (2dr, automatic unfortunately) is to beat my friend's '06 BMW 325i sedan. His is also an automatic. We raced three times today and I was so close! I just need a bit more power to edge him out.

Yesterday I got new summer tires for my 17" Motegi rims (they're Cooper Zeon RS3-S. Awesome tires, highly recommended) and a 6 hour trial of APR 93 octane tune. I already have a Carbonio CAI.

I beat him on one pull from 0 to 80, but I did have a good start. He barely beat me on two other pulls from 0 to around 80 and 100.

So what would be the best way for me to get a bit quicker acceleration out of my Rabbit? I'm ditching the spare and changing equipment to see if that helps.

Should I buy the APR 93 tune, or another brand? Or should I go with an exhaust system and/or headers? I don't want to spend much more than $500 if possible.

    Thanks!

Headers won't really help (and they're super expensive) so forget about those. How many cars does he pull you by? You can get a Magnaflow shipped to your door for around $460. APR is a good brand, so are C2 and UM. Have you checked out the pullys offered for our cars? I don't know how much they help acceleration buy they are relatively cheap.

Tune, and exhaust. Cheapest way would be to cut weight.

I'd say he was about 1.5 cars ahead of me the second run, then less than one on the third run.
And it looks like I'll buy the APR tune. I've heard better things about C2, but there isn't a dealer in the Indy area.

Liked c2 better than Apr on my trials, but if you don't have the means to get that in your area get some kind of tune lol. 91 is probably fine honestly. Haven't wanted any more out of mine and the price of 93 well...that factored into my decision too as well as the reported gains from 91 to 93. Intake and chip are your bet!

I took my ECU out of my '06 and sent it to C2, mainly because APR did not have a program for the 2006 model year, C2 were the only ones that could do it. It was secured in the car with security bolts and obviously was not meant to be taken out, but after a couple hours of battling with it in that tiny space it's in I got them cut through and got it out. I sent it from NY to KY and had it back and tuned in 3 days.

I have the United Motorsport tune and love it. I was originally going to get the C2 tune because they and UM are the only two that offer an 87 octane tune, but that didn't pan out. Jeff at UM PMed me on vortex about their tune while C2 didn't really answer my questions. So, UM got a new customer and C2 lost out. I also found out some interesting info about the two and I'm glad I went with UM and I'm not looking back.

Re: I need just a bit more power...

I bought the APR 93 octane tune today. I loved my free trial period and didn't want to deal with not having a car for a few days. Also I'm getting a testpipe soon, so APR will upgrade it to stage II for free. I don't know if there's any difference between stage I and II or not.

But I figured I might as well support my only local VW tuner.

I raced my friends automatic e46 323i and pulled 3-4 lengths on him. I had carbonio and magnaflow. But the 323 has like 10 less hp and I have a manual as well as the 2010 2.5. I have since added a catted usp midpipe and she goes pretty nicely. I kept up with a stock mk6 gti on the highway(was not a true run) just some playing around. I have ran a 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. I have a vid of that if anyone wants to see.

pretty sure I saw this over on vortex. definitely a good run. my friend's e46 330ci only pulls me by 2 or so lengths around 70~80, but that's because he tends to let off.

Re: I need just a bit more power...

So I ditched all the spare tire and other crap, cleaned my filter, changed my oil, and I beat him by about 1.5 car lengths . And as for the testpipe, I'm going to invest the money in H&R sport lowering springs instead. I've heard too many things about bad smells and 02 sensor issues with testpipes.

thanks for all the advice though. I'll race him again after break and try to post a video if possible.

Post the video if you can, por favor. And my friend's is an E90, so it has 215 hp, compared to my 150. But his transmission is already janky at 40,000 miles, so I think that help me out a bit. How has the hi-flow cat helped with your acceleration and engine response?

An intake and exhaust made your car go from 7.5 to 6.5?

If I were you, just start saving. Stage 2 c2 turbo with a custom race flash.stage 4 clutch, lightweight single mass flywheel. And a ton of other fun little go fast bits.... You'll literally BLOW your friend out of the water! I seriously love the looks I get when running away from"quick"cars.

Well I did have the spare tire out and the tools out and also half of the back seat out. 93 octane is also proven power gain on the stock ecu. I have a torque insert but that probably doesn't do much. Keep in mind it was done on a cold day which helps and a lot of it is how you drive it. That video is proof.

Re: I need just a bit more power...

This video is without the usp/catted midpipe as this was done awhile ago. The e46 323 is only 170hp and a golf 2.5 is 170hp. Apparently my frien in my car does not know how to aim and hold a camera so im sorry half the damn video is useless. I can tell you by the time I let off I had around 3-4 lengths. I believe this is from around 60-110. lol at my friend imitating an asian accent and my excitement. lol at my friend yelling out the window to start. I was expecting the outcome though but my friend in the BMW did not want to say anything. With intake/ magnaflow I dynoed 163hp on a dyno dynamics which means to the crank its 185-190 which is not too shabby. I can provide that graph if anyone wants to see it. I have not dynoed yet with the midpipe/highflow. I did not really notice much of a butt dyno change. But it does accelerate slightly quicker and have videos to prove it.
