We just purchased a 1979 diesel Rabbit, and are fixing it up to get it ready to be a daily driver. It has a rebuilt engine with ~1000 miles on it and runs well, but we've never seen the fan come on. How long do you typically have to idle before the fan turns on? The side of the radiator that the fan switch is on gets warm but not hot after idling for 10 minutes or so. The guy we bought it from was using it as a daily driver, but being in upstate NY it wouldn't have been a problem for him this winter.

Thanks!

Ok! We don't have plates yet, but tomorrow we can at least drive it around the lot it's parked in. We just want to make sure the sensor is good before it gets warm enough outside to matter. Any opinions out there on getting rid of the idiot light and switching to a temp gauge with an electrical sender?

I can't remember specifically but there if no a/c is only but the radiator fan switch.
Make sure that the fan can run... by jumpering ground and power to the motor, as a bad ground can cause the motor from spinning.

The Radiator fan has a separate Ground to it to run.... When the fan is in the shroud it is insulated from frame ground.

If you haven't replaced your Battery to frame and Frame to engine/tranny ground now would be the time to do so.

If the fan runs with power jumpered, then it is the Switch usually.

Its in coolant. You would have to drain....or get wet.
