Hi all. Nice to be part of such a lovely club. I'm 23 years old and I just bought my first car. Now most probably wouldn't have gone with a 30 year old VW Rabbit, but I did. Because I love it. So far I've had little regret. I bought it outright for $1000, the previous owner was in the middle of restoring it for his daughter, who in turn wanted a different car, so he was moving rather quickly to get rid of it.
To my luck, he had recently painted the car, replaced the top, and replaced the tires. I've since learned to drive stick and have been having a time trying to fix the small things. I tuned it up and fixed first gear ($400) and purchased a new battery ($100), I was also told that I needed to purchase a new Warm Air Regulator ($80).
I haven't yet received the Regulator in the mail, but quite regularly the car would surge upon first starting in the morning, on top of taking a few turns of the ignition to full turn over. Once in motion the car would sometime jerk a bit until it settled in. I was wondering if this problem was independent of the regulator itself? Or should I look forward to the problem being resolved once its installed? Anyhow, this morning I stalled the car (still learning) and where it would normally start right back up, it wouldn't do anything. I was stuck in the middle of the road, until I eventually managed to kickstart it with the throttle. But later on, trying to start it in my driveway, it sputtered until the battery eventually drained.
I realize that I have just rambled profusely. Sorry. New to the forum, wanted to cover my basesif you have any insight for a VW newbie, it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys.
I know I may have requested a bit of information, but a reply to any part of it would be wonderful!
I dont think anyone was ignoring you except maybe me.Im kinda knew to VW but have been mechanic-in for over 45 yrs. Is this gas? or diesel. Sounds gas. Is that the regulator on back side of the engine? Make sure gas tank is clean...new fuel filter. All your grounds are clean and good. Do a tune up if needed. Have good fuel injectors. No vacuum leaks. All these things help any car run and last a long time. Lots of good information here are other forums mentioned here. Just because the PO said he did something here and there doesnt make it so. Unless you have receipts and can see the part. Just my .02

Welcome but I didn't respond as It was a rambling type of OBTW. You sound like you know that the WUR is bad and on order, replace it charge the battery then post back.....
I get busy from time to time and have about 30 irons in the fire and juggling 6 different things at most times while balancing on a ball over a wire that is about alligator infested waters...
Welcome to RABBIT hood....

I have had similar cooling issues on both of my cabbies inthe past month, I have had to replace the same plastic water outlet 3 times in the last month on my blue cabbie as it was leaking, I replaced it proactively as I had a spare.... Then the spare started to leak from the bottom plug....So I replaced it again, then yesterday after a week on the car it broke in 2.. Cheap plastic parts, the new replacement kit from NAPA was made in Ireland... So It has to be good....
Then the Green Cabby had a bad water outlet flange, leaking on the ears, I replaced that then the very next day the heater valve blew in 2 as it was driving. Replaced that, and the new one started to leak at the pivot..... Replaced it again, and it will not allow the temp slider to move, although the slider works really well with no valve and the valve is stiff but moves freely.
The Heater core leaked and I had to replace that... So remove the dash, Knee bar... and broke the mylar on the Instrument cluster, had to repair that, then fix a light in the heater fascia...Replaced the broken seat foam and seat bottom on it as well.
So I am in the process of replacing the heater valve again. Had to replace the power cables and the Starter on the car with new.
Daughters Honda was acting funny, ended up replacing the Radiator Thermostat, and a bad battery as well as re-wiring the positive and grounds with new on it as well.
Of course last month I have to fly to Kansas City Mo, as my daughter and son were in a car wreck, had a 4 day weather window to get to Seattle prior to snow flying.... Ended up having to have Heart Surgery in Cheyenne Wy, brought the window to 0... then drive to Salt Lake, almost getting snowed in in SLC, then after getting out of Reno there were wild fires.., snow flying in Portland, that turned to torrential rain, that leaked in the car door, where I had to stop at Home Depot to get Weather strip to seal it tighter as I was getting wet, then at the same time across the street from HD a car got swept off a parking lot in a flash flood that killed one.... 12hrs to Fly home...
Baby Daughter getting Married, and trying to get a dress and a venue, then deciding on a date to get married...and all the BS associated with that..... Gee I don't know... Plus I still have 2 weeks to go on my restricted lifting and crap. Followed by just getting the Christmas tree down yesterday....I Just Don't know..... As well as trying to Work, then do other things.... Just a tad busy right now... Oh and my Daughter in Portland is being stalked by a Apt Manager, that I had to talk to the FBI about....
It just don't get any Busier than this... Well it can, but I hope it don't....
