    2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

I'm ready to do the first oil change on my 2012 Tiguan. The dealer says I should use oil filter #06J 115 403 C. The filter that came on the car from the factory is #06J 115 561 B.
Does anyone have any information on this? I dont want to mess up by using the wrong filter. Why would the dealer recommend a different part number than came with the car?
    Thanks,

more importantly, why are you worried about it if you have free maintenance from volkswagen?

Give them your VIN and they can look up what filter to get you. If it's like 17 bux then its probably correct. Also, NEVER, NEVER, nEVER rely on part numbers from parts taken off a car. They are seldom correct and numbers change/update all the time.

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

The first oil change that the dealer will do is at 10,000 miles. I don't want to wait that long for the first oil change. I feel that after the engine break-in period there could be metal shavings in the oil that I want to remove. Plus I enjoy doing the oil myself.

I really don't understand why the factory would use a different oil filter than the dealer would use. Both part numbers are available.

Are you SURE it's the same filter? The filter looks totally different than any other VW filter. Ill get the correct part number for you when I head into work this morning.

The filter itself is 561B but hte packing is 403J. The NEW packing is 403J and the old is 403C. The filter is the same 561B, however. You are good!

Wait a second, the first oil change isn't until 10,000 miles?! What about 3, 6, and 9k?! Did someone change the rules and forgot to tell me?

That "rule" was put in place by joints like jiffy lube because guess who makes more money that way? I've changed my oil at 5k intervals for who knows how long and still do. But yes, synthetic oil has lengthened the interval between oil changes.

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

Thank you Nitroscope, I was able to confirm that for the 2012 Tiguan 2.0 the correct filter is #06J 115 403 J (this supercedes the old #06J 115 403 C).
The confusing part is that on the filter it shows 06J 115 561 B.

For anyone doing their own oil changes, I found a VW dealer selling 5 of these filters for $50.00 with free shipping. 6% tax only if you live in PA like I do. You can't beat that deal. Here is the link:

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

I have a new 2012 Tiguan SE as well. I like to change my own oil, and will do so in between the 10k mile service at the dealer. If I buy a five pack of the oil filters, by the time the fifth one is used it will have been on the shelf for at least a couple of years. Will the rubber gasket/seal get too dried out to work properly if I've had it on the shelf that long?

Ok, while I can see the points here, 10k seems a little excessive. Seeing how so many of your are changing your oil independant of the dealer changes, it would appear I'm not alone in that thought. This kinda has me torn, while I'm one who typically likes to follow dealer/manufacturer directions and I'd rather leave any maintenance to my dealer, just the thought of going that long without an oil change just doesn't feel right.

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

I know it doesn't feel right. VW has been doing this since 2009 and I've seen people with 2009's and newer go several thousand miles on their engines to over 140k miles in the past few years and they all do 10k oil changes without any problems. You may even be surprised to hear that people actually are coming in at 10k for a service when normally they would forget about oil changes all together! I'd MUUUUCH rather buy a used 2009 or newer vehicle because I KNOW the services were done....vs some Joe shmo who claims services are up to date.

Uoas on mkvs have shown great results at 10k miles...its not snake oil, syntec can handle it. If u track or have a large turbo, u cut the service down.

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

Answered my own question: a thread on bobistheoilguy.com had several participants agreeing that oil filters can last several (8-10) years if kept clean and moisture free. Store them gasket side up, wrapped in plastic if possible and they'll be fine (according to them anyway). Seems logical...

It doesn't feel right because for years you've been pounded with the "change your oil at 3,000 miles" chant. It made sense then but not today with synthetic oils. I'm sure the synthetics today are not the same as even 10-15 years ago. Porsche recommends oil changes at 15,000 miles for NA vehicles and 7500 miles for Turbo vehicles and they've been using synthetic oil for at least 15 years. If you follow that same interval based on VW recomendation, then you would do 10,000 mile oil changes for NA VWs and 5,000 mile interval for Turbo VWs. The bottom line is do what is comfortable to you.

Good discusion. Thank you all for your input.
Other than an oil filter wrench are there any special tools that I'll need for the oil change? It looks like the plastic plate under the engine has triple square screws. I'll have to buy a set of those bits.

Re: 2012 Tiguan 2.0 TSI - Oil filter???

not sure if anybody else answered this, but here is the scoop. The part number is indeed 06J 115 403 J. This is what VW shows on their records, but if you purchase a filter, you will find out that the box and your receipt will show that same part number, but the actual filter number inside that same box shows the part number you were talking about ... 06J 115 561 B ... yes the same part number as the one that came on your Tiguan from the factory.

One more thing - your manual may say 5.8qts of oil capacity (mine does; pg 275), but is is actually 4.9 qts! ALSO, I love it that they still say "Engine Oil Capacity (WITH FILTER)". Have they forgotten that the oil filter is not cupside down anymore, so it does not really hold any oil in it?!?! It is upside now, emptying the oil in the engine when not running!!!

    *BELLY PAN COVER *
It has 2 plastic covers; a small clip-on kind of a cover at the front [silver; part #: 5N0.807.532.B] and a large one [black; part#: 5N0 825 235 C] covering the whole engine compartment.

Tools needed: Torx bit socket (T25) & torx bit socket (T45) [aka Star bit]

    Start at the front

    A. Small silver cover [part #: 5N0.807.532.B] under and close to the front bumper.
    1. Unscrew the 3 torx screws (T25) at the rear of this cover
    2. Pry off with your fingers the sides and slide/pull forward to remove. (that exposes 5 more torx screws at the front of the large black cover)

    B. Large black cover [part #: 5N0 825 235 C] under the engine compartment.
    3. Unscrew the front 5 torx screws (T25).
    4. Unscrew the 6 torx screws (T25) on the sides of the black cover (3 on the left side and 3 on the right side).
    5. Unscrew the 2 larger torx screws (T45) at the rear of the cover and let it drop.
    6. Go to the front again, free the two tabs/flaps that keep it in place and push cover back and remove.

    - Follow reverse steps to install. Insert front tabs/flaps in place, screw 2 larger torx screws first, then the 11 smaller torx screws, slide the smaller silver cover in place until it clips on, and finally screw the last 3 small torx screws.

    *OIL DRAIN PLUG * [Oil Pan Part #: 06J 103 600 AA]

Tools needed: Hex/Allen bit socket (6mm, H6), or Wrench (19mm); or Torx bit socket (T45)

2012s came with a hex socket cap bolt (6mm) from the factory.

From 11/22/11, a hex 6mm socket cap bolt is supposed to be used. [Part#: N-911-679-01; $2.80] (Bolt w/Floating Washer; Thread Size; M14-1.50; Under-Head Length: 12mm)
    * it looks like VW now also uses a T45 torx plug, that I was provided by the dealer thinking that I was ordering a 6mm socket cap bolt. The same size and length plug, different bit. [Part#: N-911-679-01; $2.80 + $$ for washer] (Bolt w/out Washer; Thread Size; M14-1.50; Under-Head Length: 12mm)
** make sure you use the correct bit; either a Hex/Allen bit socket (6mm, H6), or a Torx bit socket (T45), or something just in case that things change again ...

Up to 11/21/11, a regular hex 19mm head bolt has been used. [Part#: N-908-132-02; $3.00] (Pilot Point w/Floating Washer; Thread Size; M14-1.50; Under-Head Length: 22mm)

It looks like VW dealers use either. One dealer said that they are the exact same plugs, but they are not. They are the same thread, but the hex socket bolt is half the length of the hex head bolt.
The hex 19mm head bolt is easier to handle.
    [hex=hexagonal=6 sides/angles]

    *OIL FILTER*

Remove the hose that rests on top of the oil filter from the clip that keeps it in place. That gives you a little more room to handle the filter. Do not worry about any spills or anything. The filter is pretty empty. Just be careful.

    *OIL FILLER CAP*

Unfortunately, the way the cap is put together allows for dirt to collect around it. Blow the dirt before you open it so that the dirt doesn’t fall inside the engine. I vacuum mine while brushing with a toothbrush.

    *IMPORTANT*
    - 2012 Tiguan User's Manual shows 5.8 qts for Engine Oil Capacity (pg. 275), but it is actually 4.9 qts.
    - Also, the Oil Dipstick is different than the one shown on pg 275.

4.9 qts with the dip stick measurement?Did you also check the measurement using the dip stick the next day early in the morning?
So 5.8 qts with oil filter is not accurate?

    Thanks,

    [hex=hexagonal=6 sides/angles]
