Starting to learn my way around my "new" 2009 CC after dumping my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Have one issue with the CC.... my Jeep often had a pair of kayaks sitting up on the roof racks, or mountain bikes on the hitch bike rack, and even more often... both. I have looked at roof racks and found Thule has a roof rack kit that they say will work, the 480 series but this would run over $450 for the basic rails.
I have seen on Ebay some OEM type racks for the CC but not sure which to look for as most advertise for the Passat which I think might be too narrow for the CC.
What roof racks at a reasonable cost would allow me to haul the 'yaks again and allow me to get an axle style roof bike rack? Just hate hearing our 'yaks crying in the garage because they're dying of dehydration.
Thanks!
a CC is a Aassat...its actual tite is Passat CC not sure how different the roof dimensions are from the regular passat...also do you have the panoramic sunroof? if so then the roof rack might not be a good idea

The CC and Passat use different fit kits as they have a different roof lines, so they are not compatible.
Unfortunately, a quality roof rack system is going to cost. I've had Thule for almost 20 years and haven't looked back. I, personally, wouldn't cheap out and wouldn't buy stuff from Ebay unless it's a reputable brand from a reputable vendor. I look at it the same way with oem parts for my car. I'd rather pay more for quality than pay less for something I'm going to have to replace, but that's me.
Check out www.rackattack.com they feature several brands.

I figured the CC is wider then the Passat just from looking at the both from behind. Passat seems to be wider and not sure I'd risk the cost of getting tyhe wrong thing. No sun roof (unfortunately that is the one thing I kind of wish I had) but I think I'd rather have a solid roof rack system then a sun roof. Which is why I was wondering if the OEM VW racks might be better then the Thule.
Fahrvergnugen, what Thule do you have? I have been looking at the 480 system. And do you have square cross bars or the aero (elliptical aerodynamic) bars? Was hoping to find a used Thule as it's not something I'd use more then once or twice a month so not sure I need to dump that much into a new set. I am about to sell some stuff on Ebay (old trailer hitch bike rack, etc) and was going to put the funds towards a roof rack kit.
I'm willing to bet the OEM racks are made by Thule.

You think the Germans would actually allow Swedish roof racks on their cars??? <just kidding>
I looked at a set of roof racks someone was selling for a Volvo and they looked Thule all the way but the foot covers had "VOLVO" embossed in them.
Would be nice to find a set of used Thule 480's and just buy the Thule KIT1501 to fit the CC and be done with it.
I have the 400XT Aero with square 50" load bars. I would check VWVortex to see if anyone is selling a used system. They get more traffic in their classifieds, although, I think someone sold a Thule rack on this forum last month.

I've got the Thule 480R Foot Pack with 53" Aero Bars (oval profile) on my Rabbit, love the set up. I'm using the Thule 598 Criterium Bike Racks (actually bought with Volvo labelling for a previous car, Volvo dealer was cheaper than Rack Attack).
I was considering Whispbar racks at one time, but stuck with Thule since I had the bike racks already. I noticed that Thule is now selling AeroBlade (wing profile) instead of the Aero Bars (oval profile) which should make them quieter and comparable to the Whispbar claims.

The 480R and aero is what I was looking at, too. A little pricier then the square bars but probably worth it. Would not have the rack on the car unless I was using it so not too awfully worried about aerodynamics. Kayaks aren't exactly aerodynamic up there to start with.
On a side question.... I have seen some really cool mini lightweight trailers for bikes or kayaks. Has anyone ever put a tow kit on a VW CC?
And Nic, sorry for the cut-and-pasting of the wrong text. Glad I didn't call you LIFETIME VIP ;O)
