    Re: 2008 rabbit

So the car won't drive in a straight line and pulls left if you take your hands off the steering wheel? Did this symptom happen over night? Did you or someone else hit something (pot hole, curb, etc?) Could be a number of things but I doubt its the steering rack, they don't usually go bad. More likely a combination of alignment, bad cv joint, wheel bearing or some other suspension component. It's rare for the steering racks to go bad.

You can jack the front of the car up, make sure the steering wheel is locked. Grab each wheel and see if there is any play.

    Re: 2008 rabbit

Actually for Vibrations I'd check tire balance. This time of year up north it gets cold and pot holes begin to form, not saying you hit one just something to look for is wheel balance - as far as pulling to one side Id check alignment. One other thing to consider is tire pressure. Check both front wheels, I don't know what they are set at but this time of year with it getting colder tire pressure can change rather quickly.

Well It does go strait if i let go of steering wheel. its just that when your driving car moves normal but when theirs a small curve to to right, or just fact of putting it back on strait on the lane. i kinda hit a kinda big rock and it just cracked the bumper. and another thing i noticed is when car is is stopped if i move steering wheel i can hear a small knocking sound as i turn the wheel but its not as i turn its just in a certain position of the wheel that makes it. ex i turn it it little right then left. i lift up car and i did same thing and it kinda sounds it comes from steering rack...

Sounds like maybe a CV Joint? Or a Strut Tower bar being loose? Im not a mechanic just shooting ideas out there.

Screw the dealer. You can buy the parts your self and get it installed much cheaper then that. Where are you located?

Find a reputable shop in your area that works on german cars and is knowledgeable with VWs, and get a quote for exactly what you need. You might save some $$.

How many miles are on your 2008? Seems a bit premature for a rack n pinion to go out already unless your drive on some hard roads?

Second this... sounds just...like abnormal wear and tear if it actually IS the issue. Which I still doubt. Because the dealer diagnosed it

I'm guessing its not the actual rack.its servo electric.so its not apt to go out.it is very possible though that your tie rod end has worn and has play in it.or a wheel bearing, or CV, or wheel balance, or toe is out.get an alignment.it'll probably fix the issue.
    You need
    Wheels balanced
    Alignment
    Inspect tie rod ends
    Inspect ball joint
    Inspect wheel bearing
    Replace whatever is worn.

Search online how to inspect the above parts
