Due to a mishap I need to replace my valves in my '86 hydraulic head. Ordered a set of valves which are supposed to measure 3.740" long for both exhaust and intake. I get the valves and they measure 3.748 to 3.762. That's .008 to .022" longer than they are supposed to be. Will the hydraulic lifters compensate for this? Can they be ground down to the correct length? Or do I just take them back. The original exhaust valves were sodium filled, but I am not so sure of the replacements. Seems exhaust valves are hard to find for this MF engine.
Mishap caused by intermediate shaft pulley coming loose. Pulley shot. Seeing two different replacements, one that is flat across and one that has sides. Which is the best to use or is there no difference?
I also am trying to figure out what happen. I ordered new Intake and Exhaust valves, valve springs, valve guides, valve keepers and valve stem seals for my 86 hyd ME engine. I put the valve guides in and took the head to the machine shop to resurface the valve seats and hone the valve guides to fit the valves. This took about a month as I told them it was a hobby project and to work on it when they had time. WELL friday I picked the head up along with the bock ( $367.00) that they magnaflux and bored out and brought it home and was about to lap the valves in and thought I should take a look at the Bentley one more time and check the measurement of the valves and valve springs and good thing; The valves read 94.10 mm and should have been 95.0 mm and the outside valve springs were about 3/16 + longer than the book called for. What is going on here!!! So Monday morning I am making a call to the parts house, (Northern Auto Parts) and see whats going on. I don't have a clue as to why the valves are short but the springs come close to what a 1.6l mechanical head would take.
