I finally getting most of the bugs worked out of my 84 rabbit convertible, and now i'm really just down to the exhaust. I'm planning on putting headers on it but i am also planning on fabricating my own 2" exhaust as opposed to spending $400 for a stainless steel 2" exhaust.
So i'm wondering has anyone else made their own exhaust? And if so how much tubing did you need to get from the cat to the muffler?
Also because i'm putting headers on it would it be better to go with 2.25" tubing or will 2" be fine? I just don't want to waste my time with a 2" if its not really worth it.
Get your header, and see what the outside of that is, then get the same pipe, or 1/8 larger....

Sweet thanks Brian, I was thinking not much bigger than what the header is would be best. If you had to take your best guess, would you say that to make the whole exhaust from the cat back i would need no more than 8-10 ft. of tubing? I'm just tryin to get an idea. I just dont want to buy way more tubing than i'm going to need.
I would say 8 feet would be fine. These cars aren't that big. Just make sure u can buy that little. Many places don't like to sell to the end user so they may give u a hard time for min order...

Ok thanks man! I know from summit racing you can buy 4 ft. lengths of stainless steel tubing for like $24-$27 depending on whether i get 2" or 2.25" diameter pipe and as far as i know they dont require a minimum amount of feet to be ordered. So Ill probably end up buying two 4 ft. pieces. The only reason i thought 10 ft. might be adequate is because i'm not totally sure how long the exhaust pipe that goes over the sub frame is cause it has all those bends in it. I didnt think it could be much more than 4 ft. though.
Well don't forget the bends of the axle beam, it too depends on if you are going to keep the Cat, an the resonator as that will save a couple of feet too.

well at the moment i'm planning to keep the cat just for the sake of inspection purposes.. it already passed but i figure ill just keep it on there for now. but who knows i may delete it. i guess i'm going to get under the car this weekend and try to get an approximate length for the section of exhuast that goes over the sub frame/axle with some string, that area is really my main concern. and then for the rest of the exhaust so i have an idea of what i'll really need.
I'm not sure where you are (adding that info to your profile would be nice) but here in Delaware they inspect to see if you have a cat installed even if your levels are good. They use a mirror on wheels to look under the car and if you don't have a cat they fail you.
One V E R Y good reason to have a diesel. They don't do emissions inspections on them. I hope to drop a diesel in my jeep next spring...

Yeah I'm in northern NJ but they do check for emissions however they dont check with a mirror to see if the cat is in. But I think I'm gonig to keep mine in just for the purpose of not having to spend a hundred bucks every time i need my car inspected. If it passed with the way the exhaust is now I'm sure it will pass again.
And diesel is sweet! There was a diesel rabbit for sale down by where I work and I was considering buying it because at the time because my cabby wasn't up and running right yet. But a diesel jeep would be sweet.. I've only seen one other person have that idea up here.
