Body work, painting (HVLP)

This seems to be about the right section but not exactly.

So in the next few months I'll be looking at picking up a HVLP gun and turbine. Although I like the idea of a large compressor and a HVLP gun. It is almost impossible to find a reasonably priced compressor that runs on 110 and will have the required output to run a gun efficiently.

Since I will likely be renting for the next 10 years, or possibly living in base housing any investment on my part to support a 220v compressor will be wasted when I move which happens every 3 years or so.

This is where the benefits of a turbine come into play. For the price of a reasonable compressor I can get a complete kit to include gravity fed gun, turbine, and all the required piping (hoses).

I've done minor body work before and I'm not terrible at it. But I have never sprayed a car before. I've done stains and varnishes, but not automotive paint.

Does anyone have any tips and advice for a HVLP setup and automotive painting?

don't go too expensive for private work...go to harbour freight and buy two of their spray guns (20$ each). I have used them alot during high school and they work GREAT. Just make sure you clean them after each use. The reason for the two guns is one is dedicated for primer only and the other is for basecoat/clearcoat. It will make life easier. And you can go with a 20-30 gallon compressor with no issues. BUT your biggest investment would have to be a water separator, please do not skimp on them, water makes life horrible when it comes to painting.

Well the problem with going with a 20-30 gallon compressor is that none of them seem to have the recommended CFM output for a HVLP gun and still run 110v.

I've used a 15 gallon compressor (homemade) and never had a problem. The cfm is rating wat psi the compressor can sustain, that's if u are painting continually and not stopping yea...that might be an issue. Plus u aren't going to have the gun wide open when painting anyway so you will be using less air.
