    MKII Rear Driver Window Replacement

Has anyone ever replaced the window mechanism? This is a manually operated drivers-side rear window in an '86 Jetta.

I took the door panel apart to check it out and the cable is frayed and no longer attached. I can't see the whole mechanism and don't really know what I need to purchase. Not to mention... HOW? Any advice?

Thanks in advance for you help!
    Jennifer

go to a local scrap yard, there are plenty of mk2s out there for you to just grab a cheap window crank assy...hell you can probly get a whole door for cheap.

Hi Jennifer, I moved your thread to the Jetta MK2 area because you might get more exposure that way (and more answers!)

I wish I could just hit a junkyard! Around here, they don't have much for those anymore. They strip the cars they get and then scrap what's left. I won't have any luck finding a door anywhere in the Midwest, I'm afraid.

But, it looks like I can buy the parts fairly simply. I just have NO clue how to install. I was hoping someone had done it and could give me some pointers?

Well I have never done a window job on a mk2, it does seem simple. The manual doesn't go into detail?

    Where are you located?

EDIT: I saw ur from the midwest...

You might want to check over on the Vortex forums for a step-by-step. I haven't seen one on our forum yet.

Re: MKII Rear Driver Window Replacement

Thanks for the heads up on the Vortex forum. I'll go check that one.

Yeah, the repair manual I have pretty much skips over the manual windows. It does show a bit on the power units, but not clearly enough that makes sense to me. I have a new regulator coming (with my clutch cable and 2nd new temp sensor), so I'll have parts to play with.

redstarflight9 - did you find a solution? I have a Mk2 VW Service Manual that has a couple of pages on the window regulators. I can send copies to you if you need them.
I am currently having trouble with the Driver window - it only goes down about 2 - 3 inches and stops. I've not yet taken it apart, but I hope the tracks have gotten messed up somehow. Don't know what I'll need.

    Hi Cal,

No, I haven't figured it out yet. I would LOVE copies of those pages. My Bentley only has instructions for power windows. Do you need those? I'd be happy to scan and email them to you.

Honestly, it's been the farthest thing from my mind. The car started running so bad that I got frustrated and let it sit the last couple of months. A generous local guy, whose kindness can only be God-inspired, has been troubleshooting & replacing TONS of parts for me. When it comes home, I'll probably dig that regulator kit out and start looking at it again...

Okay, I will scan them, only two pages, and post them. Might not get to them until Monday.
