    Oil Change at 10k?

Since I was a teenager I religiously followed the 3k oil change routine... with my new CC I've read/heard a recommendation of 10k or 1 year. I'm not running my CC that much... it's been 8 months and I've only got 5k on it. I'm sweating over here thinking I should change the oil sooner rather than later. What do you all think? What are you prescribing to? Thanks!

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

if it's the first 5k miles, then go ahead and change it. there are particulates from the break-in period that need to be removed. afterward, every 10k miles will suffice. just keep your eye on the oil level once you start getting near 10k miles. please use the full synthetic oil that is recommended in your owners manual. if you have any questions regarding this, let us know...

welcome to the VWOC and enjoy your stay...

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

To be honest the 3000 mile oil change interval is more of a marketing gimmick in my opinion. I've always changed my oil at 5,000 mile intervals even with non-synthetic oil. Full synthetic oil will last longer than regular oil so 10,000 miles between oil changes is fine but if you don't feel comfortable then change it every 5,000. As with you, I don't drive my car as much as some so more time would go by for me to reach 10,000 miles, so I change mine every 5,000 which ends up being twice a year. The first oil change is recommended at 5,000 miles as per your owner's manual.

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

i was curious about this too...my CC has 7000k on it and i havent changed it yet(ive always changed my sythetic at 5k intervals)..but with this care free maintenance it says every 10k..ive looked all over my manual and it doesnt say anything about changing it at 5k...just 10k..i looked in the maintenance section..and the break in period section..only 10k as per maintenance schedual..does anyone have a page number in the CC manual where it suggests the first one at 5k?

it's just advised by people on this forum and past engine builders alike. it won't be in the manual...

So basically people like to chance damage to their engine cuz of an extra 50 to 100 a year?

The filter hates 10k miles, system can do it but it'll be so dirty. My fsi oil analysis said 7k was good but I do all highway.

My manual states oil change service at 5,000 miles. Then oil change and maintenance service every 10,000 miles thereafter. Any model 2009 and newer no longer shows the 5000 mile oil change service.

The manual also stated where my cig lighter fuse was and guess what, it was wrong.

Go 10k, send it to blackstone and see how it turns out.

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

If all highway, no traffic, no high temp stop and go.... I could see doing 10k changes... Otherwise, no. The only reason they started that was because they started the care free maintenance. Which reminds me, I still need to get the oil changed... I'm at 6k miles since the last change...

2000-2500 for me. I'm religious about oil changes. I do it myself and i don't care about the $40 I spend every two months. It's what keeps me sleeping at night.

If you are only going 2500 miles in a year, I could see that, but otherwise it's a waste changing the oil that often.

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

It never hurts to change it sooner. I ALWAYS change it at 5K miles or less. I think the only reason VW suggests 10K miles, is because of the care free maintenance, to save themselves some money. It is Always better to have new oil to get all those particulates out of the oil. Your engine will last longer that way.

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

I always change every 3500 miles. Before the 2011 CC, I have a 98 Accord (still have it). After 181k miles, it runs like the day it was bought. The concern isn't so much oil being "dirty" as it loses its lubrication function. Fresh oil molecules are large with long carbon chains. This chains gradually break down at high temperature and pressure. The oil gradually turns black because more and more chains break and carbon in the long molecular chains becomes free carbon.

In this process, oil becomes thinner and less effective in providing lubrication. There is not a point where the oil effectiveness changed from 100% to 0%, the deterioration process is continuous and gradual, so where to draw the line is up to you.

    Re: Oil Change at 10k?

Synthetic oil these days is much more sturdy and resilient; so it simply lasts longer. The oil will simply not break down as fast when compared with standard oil. Also, the oil coming out of the factory may even have Esther properties in it, which go for around $9 per quart compared to retail oil sold at your local auto supply stores.

Changing oil more often if driving habits put more stress on the vehicle is not out of the question, but it is also not as necessary as it used to be due to technological advances. Volkswagen's engines are much lower tolerances today compared to several years ago so you need less oil to lubricate the "space" in between components. The synthetic properties do compensate for the additional heat. Less space, means less oil "used", hence the life of the oil is extended. Comparing a 20xx car today to one purchased in the 90's is not an apples-to-apples comparison by any stretch of the imagination. It is becoming an "old wives tale" to stay on a 3000 mile regimen; and certainly old habits are hard to break. Lastly, Volkswagen turbo's "want" to be driven hard. If you live in a region of the world where extreme weather in Germany does not compare, then you are probably not working the engine as much as you think.

Personal preferences aside, stick to the manufacturer's recommendations unless some characteristics of you particular vehicle, driving habits or the environment deem otherwise. Even then, base your decision on facts, such as recommendations from your local dealer.

mwoolfso, I think you made good points. I did some Wiki reading (my trusted source of information), here is what I found.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3,000_mile_myth

I have never used synthetic oil because I knew the good'o 5w-30 plus 3500 mile change worked. May be I should start. Is CC factory filled with synthetic oil?

You should use the oil that is required by your engine not because it worked for your 3500 mile oil change interval. Yes, your CC takes synthetic oil that should be marked VW spec on the container. Any repair to you engine for something that was determined was caused by using incorrect oil will not be covered under warranty.

acgator, does VW CC user manual REQUIRE synthetic oil? I don't have my manual because the dealership lost it for my car. They are ordering it.
