My 2001 GTI will be going in for an oil/filter change in the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if I should have the oil in the transmission changed as well. I've spoken to a couple of independent mechanics, and they say to leave it alone unless the level is low. One of them said that, since it has 100,000 miles on it, it might do more harm than good. He said that, at that mileage, things tend to settle. I don't like messing with things just for the sake of it, but, just the same, I don't want to neglect this. Since metal doesn't float, I don't know what "settling" could have occurred. If anyone has any advice, I would be happy to hear it. By the way, the other mechanic said that the fluid doesn't need to changed. It should just be topped up if low. This sounds kind of nutty, since nothing lasts for ever. I forgot to mention that I'm talking about a 5-speed manual transmission.
