    83 vw rabbit gti 1.8 8v timing belt ???

    trying to replace the timing belt on my 83 rabbit GTI 1.8.
    since it got loose and the timing is all messed up i'm looking for some
    information how the sprokets are supposed to be alligned. the haihes book
    i have doesn't help much for this particular model. thanks much.

    Ok, the tranny at 0TDC via the plug on the tranny.
    The dimple on the back of the cam equal to the top of the valve cover lip, (not the tin re-bar)
    The has mark on the side of the distributor closest to the engine block case, in the middle of the rotor.

    One more Q. Do you know what is the chance of damaging the valves, since the timing was off and I was trying to start the engine? I mean on this particular engine, 1.8 with 8 valves. I know there is a big chance for the pistons to meet with the valves, but on some engines they don't, I hope that's my case. Thanks again.

    if it is a 1.8 GTI or 1.7 Gasser, they are non-interference engines....That means no damage should of occurred.

    Gassers non-interference.
    Diesels are usually toasted.

    Started rigth up.
