    Rear hitch on your Jetta?

Just curious, has anyone added a hitch for not so much towing, but as an alternative to a roof rack to carry skiis, bikes, etc?

I do not have one but i've seen it done. The few that i've seen were total hack jobs and they removed the carbon canister causing all sorts of problems. Whatever you do be sure to get a pro to do it.

Yeah, unfortunately it bottoms out every once in while, coming in and out of steep driveways or even scraped the bottom coming out of my garage. I did have two kids in the back but it's still annoying.

Must have been some big kids! Did they mount the hitch lower than normal? I can see scraping it on an inclined driveway but not much else if installed properly.

    Thanks for your input!

I installed a Curt model. Model number 11072. You can find an example of this hitch here: http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2006_Volkswagen_Jetta.htm This hitch has never touched ground for us, even coming up the ramp from my garage which is quite steep. I chose this Curt model as it seemed to be the most robust and it seemed to tuck up the most effectively. The charcoal canister issue is only one if you are a dumb a$$ during installation. If you are not very experienced mechanically, you'll have to take your time and think it through. Really though, it is quite straightforward. I've been extremely happy with mine and it's really quite difficult to even see it on the car. This is somewhat due to the fact that the vehicle is black as well, so they blend nicely. Ultimately, my wife is too short to put bikes on a rooftop carrier and doesn't like the look of a carrier on the car all the time, so the hitch mount fit the bill and works great. I really recommend the Curt product.

I have a curt hitch on my rabbit, I love it. Installation took maybe 1 1/2 hrs. Im lowered and I have yet to scrape it.
