    Torn between GTI and Golf

Hello, I'm a first time forum visitor with a possibly odd question. I've driven late model GTI's and Golfs. I love the power of the GTI but I don't like the sport suspension. I like the ride of the Golf much better. Is it possible to modify a GTI suspension so it is like the Golf? If it is possible, would a dealer do it, or would I need to go to a custom shop?

    Thanks folks!

It's probably in the tires. GTI has lower profile tires than the golf. THE GTI is meant to be sporty and everything about it is sporty. If you start detuning the GTI, you just paid a heavy premium for a regular golf. If you like the golf then get the golf. 6grand cheaper and only 30 less HP with a ride you love.

If money is no object here... ask them to put some 16s on the GTI and see how you like it.

Re: Torn between GTI and Golf

Thanks for the replies. I've tried out a few different versions of vehicles and wheels and would rank them on ride quality in this order:

    1. Gas golf, with 15" wheels (best ride, I thought)
    2. TDI golf, 17"
    3. 08 GTI, 17"
    4. 10 GTI, 18"

The wheels make a difference in the ride, but the suspension makes a difference, too. I think I would either get a new gas Golf and put bigger wheels on it for looks, or get a 08 GTI with the included 17" rims and mess with the suspension. Maybe the latter is recipe for disaster. I'm not sure.

Like nitroscope said it's most likely in the tires. I don't think you will like the ride with the Golf with lower profile tires. I think it would be just like the TDI golf with 17 inch tires if not worse. (in terms of comfort)

Re: Torn between GTI and Golf

I rode in my buddies MK6 GTI with the 18" wheels. It rode better than my Rabbit with 18" wheels and stock shocks and Driver Gear springs. Don't mess with the GTI suspension. Change the wheels if you must, otherwise stick with the Golf.

like dj said, if you have the money to get either one get the gti. after a while you're going to get the itch to mod the cars for more power, and the only one that's going to leave you satisfied is the gti. good luck!

Re: Torn between GTI and Golf

Hey, thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'll have to give some careful consideration to the purchase, but will scratch modifying the GTI suspension off my list of viable options.

I'm going the other way GTI suspension on the Golf MK5. I do have 17'' wheels on it also. Sporty ride! For the lowly Golf. LOL

Re: Torn between GTI and Golf

    I wouldn't say the Golf is "lowly". You've got a great car. I've got a 2001 GTi with a VR6, and I still miss my '97 Jetta 2 liter.
