Heater blows cold air in 01 passat

I bought the car and the heater has never blow warm air. The blower works but only cold air blows out. Both of the hoses going to the heater core are hot to the touch so I know that the hot water is circulating through. Can anyone help me with this problem. My kids are freezing in the back and I have to cover them with blankets and put snow gear on them to keep them warm. Any help would be appreciated.

do you hear a door flap open and closed when you move the dial from cold to heat? do you hear anything happen behind the dash when you adjust the controls? hopefully it is just a loose or disconnected cable that controls the door.

i'm sure some others will have some more ideas for you...

in the meantime, welcome to the VWOC...

The heater cores on that clog up solid. just because they are hot does not mean it's flowing....it just means the coolant is hot on the engine and it warms the hoses. Remove both hoses and get a hose and jam it up to the core and flush all that crud out. It usually works for a little while then clogs up again.

Keep in mind that your heater core and radiator are made of the same material and same design, so just because you fix or replace the core doesn't mean the radiator is working as designed either. Mixing ANYTHING other than G12 plus and water will cause the coolant to sludge up.

nitro, could the OP inspect the coolant and find indications of the sludge? also, would the sludge cause the engine to run slightly above normal operating temps?

Re: Heater blows cold air in 01 passat

    Sometimes and yes.

The heater cores can also fail in such a way coolant bypasses the core and circulates in the core and out the other side. When this happens a little plastic bridge breaks and coolant circulates too soon in the core. If THIS happened, then you need a brand new core.

After flushing, hook the hoses back up and start the engine with heat on full. Rev the engine at 3k rpm until it's at full operating temperature. Remember, after each flush you are puting COLD water into the system so it needs to circulate at a higher rpm to warm the coolant and move hot coolant into the core.
