Hi.
My 1996 golf GTi starts fine, runs fine, even drives fine, but when it reaches normal operating temperature (water temp gauge half way and dash comp tells me oil temp 88-90 degrees) the car dies, wont restart, let it cool off a couple of degrees by the oil temp and it'll start again. Then die when it reaches 88-90 degrees.
A mobile diagnostics came out and told me his computer doesn't recognise the car even though it had the correct socket.
Can't helpbut think it is something stupid.
Hope someone can help.

You need to find the codes. For that year, you need to have the engine running as the codes are being read since it throws a distributor fault when the car is off, but doesn't throw it when running.
could be a coil. I'm assuming this is a 2.0? If so then the coil on the firewall may be causing it. While running, dump water on it. If it dies, you need a coil.

thanks for the reply, tried changing out the coil pack for one I know is working fine, any other ideas?

Without reading faults, my other guesses are crankshaft speed sensor, coolant temp sensor for ecm (not cluster) and fuel pump/pump relay.

Wow a blast from the past! I had this car around 2 years ago, it WAS the crankshaft sensor as I think someone suggested. I had it fixed. Driving home from the garage, it stalled, the revs seem to be a bit low, but however with the air con on it ran fine. Sold it at a loss eventually just to get rid :0(
On the upside, I now have a smart Passat with all the toys, problem free... so it would seem I wasn't supposed to have the Golf... :0)
