They plug into your OBD connector...no ecm removal needed![]()
I work at a dealer...if that ecm needs to come out for replacement I cringe at the thought!
...then be forewarned: your 2010 Tiguan engine control unit is housed with anti-tamper (no-slot) bolts. Your APR technician will need to dremel the bolts to make them screwdriver-friendly. The ECU is then removed, and then flashed with the new improved torque remap. Then the APR people need to replace the housing with brand new anti-tamper bolts to restore it to factory appearance.
Remapping isn't for everyone, but if you are going to invest, then phone ahead and make sure your APR technician has at least four of those 2010 VW bolts in stock so he can restore the housing back to its original state after the flashing procedure.

I have confirmed with both APR and multiple different APR technicians online: the 2010 Tiguan TSI ECU does indeed have to be REMOVED in order for the technician to access the software port. Unlike previous model years for the same engine, you can no longer go through the convenient external port.
And yes, to complicate matters, the 2010 ECU is housed inside a "chastity belt" cover with anti-tamper bolts. These bolts can be dremeled out, the ECU removed and remapped, and then the system reset to OEM appearance by fitting brand new anti-tamper bolts upon reassembly.
Phew... remapping is not as easy as it was for earlier models. But a competent APR dealer will still do the work... they'll just take two hours to do it instead of 1.

Ahh ok. Yeah, the tiguan is more open than say a Golf. Doing a jetta or golf ecm is a nightmare of a job trying to remove those bolts.
