My friend while servicing his car accidentally poured in Transmission Oil instead of Motor Oil. When he noticed his mistake he didnt start the car. I told him that draining the oil and putting in fresh oil should avoid causing damage to his car. I know that the viscosity between these oils is very different with transmission oil being hydrolic fluid. So can he simply drain and replace the oil in the engine or should he get his car towed for further repairs. Keep in mind that this is a mid 90's Corolla and he doesn't want to spend money on costly repairs.
drain the tranny oil, go buy some marvel mystery oil and some seafoam....after draining the tranny oil flush it out with the seafoam slowly and let it drain all out. Then filler up with reg oil and subtract half a quart and put in half a quart of the marvel mystery oil.

Alright I will tell him this. So the seafoam just drains through the engine with the drain plug removed? After the seafoam I just add the regular oil while stopping one quart below the normal volume and adding the marvel mystery oil. I just want to be sure since its his car and not mine.
The seafoam is gunna flush it out a bit and the mystery oil i would add like 1/2 a quart...thats for some additives to help for the future. Your friend doesnt have much to worry about.

Awesome thanks for the help.
Not sure about Toyotas...but the old mid 90's Honda (Acura Integra) I used to have actually used 10w-30 for the tranny oil until Honda came out with their own brand tranny oil several years later. (the tranny was originally built to use normal 10w-30 engine oil...it was only later that Honda developed a dedicated tranny oil)
I wouldn't be suprised if Toyotas tranny oil for mid 90's Rolla was very similar to their engine oil....I would just drain and refill and forget about it.

Yea we'll see how it goes. I dont think he has the time and patience for the car, so I suspect he will just drain and replace the oil and say "so be it". Ofcourse if it was my car I'd take the extra precaution.
tranny fluid and engine oil have more differences than just viscocity.

I wouldn't worry about it, the bearing clearances on that car are probably so big that 80w-90 wouldn't help it.![]()
