Torque multiplication through the torque converter. A standard automatic has a converter and you can masht he brake and gas and the rpms will rise to about 2200 rpm. That is called stall speed. This allows the engine to be at 2200 rpm making a lot of torque to get you going. So from a standstill the standard automatic will launch much faster from a dead stop. Just like in a manual gearbox you need to launch the car at a higher rpm so you get into the powerband faster. A DSG will NOT do this. You need ot use launch control for a dsg if you wish to acclerate much quicker off the line. Offroad and towing with DSG make this difficult because the clutches are clamping down at such a low rpm that the engine may not have the torque to get you moving (think towing a boat from a boat ramp. would you rather tow a boat up a hill from a dead stop at 1200 rpm and lug the crap out of the engine or at 2500 rpm and let the torque converter do all the work and multiply the torque. Once you start moving, it doesn't matter what transmission you have : dsg, auto, manual. It's the initial start off that you want a standard auto.
