Yes you can, in both sports mode and Tip Tronic mode.

    Re: engine break

whether in regular "drive" or "sport" the tranny will automatically downshift as you let up on the gas, or start to brake

so I'm doubting that downshifting in the tiptronic mode would hurt anything.....tiptronic was designed to emmulate a manual box.....and downshifting is key

    Re: engine break

Well, the owners manual says you can use it while driving downhill to assist in braking. So I would say it shouldn't do any harm to the engine or trani. I would however not suggest it on a day to day basis. I even avoid it with the DSG and it's a clutch (2 of them) , not a torque converter.

Ha, I just noticed Firefox 2.0 has a real time built in spell checker...nice.

    Re: engine break

Well you need to look at it this way...making the engine parts move more will wear them out faster. Brake pads are dirt cheap and easy to replace compared to an engine. I would not suggest it for normal driving. I don't see any reason why you can't do it often, other then more wear on the engine and trani.
