    What's your Favorite Horror/Sci-FI/Thriller Movie?

So, we're halfway through October and I haven't seen any discussion of Horror/Scary/whatever movies.

Post your favorite and give details (without giving the movie's plot away!). Can be Horror/Thriller/Slasher/Sci-Fi/etc.

Gotta say mine's probably Romero's Night of the Living Dead -- because it is very well written and deeper than most people realize. Also spawned my obsession with zombies in general.

For a more recent movie -- DEFINITELY Shaun of the Dead. I can quote that movie backwards and forwards. Makeup is awesome, plot is amazing, acting is great...and there's plenty gratuitous violence. Buckets full of bloody win!

I liked that movie too, but now I'm liking 28 weeks later more.

I've basically been a horror movie fanatic since I was really young. Me and my sister, actually. We love a good scare. I've seen all sorts of horror flicks - from zombies to supernatural to gory to disturbing situations.

My favorite old scary movie would have to be The Exorcist, hands-down. I've always been fascinated with people being possessed by demons. That's why I also enjoyed watching the Amittyville movie series. So frightening when I was a child. Does anyone remember Puppet Master? You know, the one where the puppets came alive and started killing people left and right? That freaked the heck outta me when I was little. Hell Raiser was also a freakishly scary movie back then. Oh and if you haven't seen The Thing, which is a classic, I recommend that one 100%.

I enjoy gruesome movies, too - the ones with blood and gore and all that good stuff. Such examples would be the Saw series and even The Hills Have Eyes. The Collector, which came out this year I believe, was a gruesome one as well. I've also always been a fan of those old Jason, Freddy, and Mike Myers movies. I can't wait to see Nightmare on Elm Street when it comes out next year.

Now I get a chill when I see paranormal movies, or fear of the unknown. The most recent one I've watched was Paranormal Activity. The first part of the movie is sort of bland, but towards the end it starts getting REAL good lol. Those last 10 seconds freaked the heck out of me. I couldn't even sleep that night lol.

All in all, I'm pleased to call myself a horror movie fan. I'm always looking for more scares.

So many good flicks in this category. Some faves...

Return of the Living Dead: undead + punk rock = epic win. Great death scenes, cool mortician stuff, lots of screaming and gore. "Send more paramedics" is such an awesome catchphrase that a UK hardcore band named themselves this.

30 Days of Night: the only vampire movie I've ever seen that actually freaked me out. Cool concept, wicked cinematography, awesome vampires, lots of blood.

Evil Dead 2: Bruce Campbell - 'nuff said.

28 Days/Weeks Later: the Infected = best zombies evar. Both these movies fused awesome adrenaline rush horror with captivating drama and great storylines.

Alien: the original sci-fi horror movie is still the best. Awesome tension and pace, great characters, and the chest burst scene never gets old. Effing classic. Aliens rules too, but it's more sci-fi than horror.

The Ring: creepiest movie of all time. Not really boo-scary, but will burn nightmare-inducing images into your head for weeks.

The Hunger: always loved this sexy vampire classic with David Bowie and a young hawt Susan Sarandon. Her vamp/sex scene with Catherine Deneuve is legendary.

Other good ones: Jacob's Ladder, Dawn of the Dead, The Thing (remake), Lost Boys, The Descent, American Werewolf in London, The Grudge, Serpent and the Rainbow, The Howling, Re-Animator... jeezus I watch a lot of movies...

I completely forgot about return of the living dead!

our first cd has some sweet quotes from that movie.

and yesssss....send more paramedics is sweet. The Shai Hulud sister project zombie apocalypse is also super b.a. Their first 7" actually played backwards (from the inside out). Glad to say I own a copy of it and their split with send more paramedics.

    EDIT: "They're" = fail. corrected.

I reckon the most "edge of the seat" movie I've seen is "Das Boot", the German-made U-boat drama. The original mini-series version is one of the finest pieces of cinema in any language. Not really a horror, but a worthy mention.

Top marks in the Horror genre for me, go to "The Shining".
I never tire of watching Jack slowly lose it.

Top Sci-fi, "2001: a Space Odyssey". It cannot be beaten. Given that it is 40 years old, it is in a class of its own. Closest rival is Bladerunner, on Blu-ray, it is stunning.

Best Western (not the hotel chain!) is: "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly". Nothing else even close.

Best chick flick (easiest to have to sit through in order to get a bit of slap and tickle from the missus) is: the Shawshank Redemption.

Best Sports Movie: Either Chariots of Fire or Escape to Victory.

    Best Biography: Lawrence Of Arabia

Best Crime movie: The Italian Job

Best Spy Movie: The Third Man

    Discuss!

I hate horror movies.... try real life.

Imagine going on a professional paranormal investigation ("ghost hunt") in a well known haunted restaurant... you are asked to sit alone in the dark at 3am in a room with documented activity as a test subject, while being filmed with night vision.

Then watch the tape after it's played back and see what was in the room with you. THAT is scary.

No, I went along as an observer and ended up being a test subject. Never been so creeped out in my life. I believe this sums it up:

anyway, back on topic... the movie that bothered me quite a bit was The Hills Have Eyes. That was just gross.

Kinda freaky, right? Same goes for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - especially the original version. That one is just messed up. It's scary to think that the whole family can team up and torture/kill innocent teens on their vacation lol

EDIT: Btw, I just downloaded Quarantine and watched it tonight. It had a nice plot to it, but I could have done without the camera shaking all the time. It also pissed me off that the damn camera guy couldn't focus at all when the good parts came along.

The shaking of the camera always gets me nauseous, which is why I could never watch Cloverfield the whole way through. I've haven't seen The Blair Witch Project yet but it's downloading now and I'm sure it's probably the same thing in terms of camera agitation. Paranormal Activity I could tolerate. At least the guy paid enough attention to focus and aim the camera where he wanted lol.

I wouldn't mind seeing it again too. I think they did a good job for such a low budget film. Those ending moments were freakin' awesome! Everyone was like "OMFG! NO WAY!" lol it was great.

One of the best newer scare flicks is The Haunting in Connecticut. I don't know if it was because I live in an old ass house, but that movie got me. Had to chase it with Terminator Salvation.

As far as new Zombie flicks, Zombieland owns! Rule #32-Enjoy the little things.

Hmm, The Haunting in Connecticut wasn't scary at all for me. That exorcism part was pretty good though lol.
