I just bought a 1982 rabbit diesel. I've been driving it a few days and today i experienced what I have come to find out is called runaway diesel. The car Revs all the way up and cant be stopped by pulling the key out. Luckily i have a 4spd manual and was able to stall the car out on the side of the road. I let it sit for a few minutes then it started up fine. Ive been reading other forums and all the tell me is how to stop the car. I want to know what could be causing this in my car, and what the proper course of action is to take care of it.

You have some oil leaking into the engine somewhere. Either bad rings, valve seals, or breather system. Diesels will burn anything...including motor oil if it makes its way into the cylinders.

invest in an oil baffle for under the valvecover. it should splash extra oil back into the valves. From 1985 and up they came standard and helped elinate most of the runaway diesel problem.
