Thinking about buying a new 2008 Rabbit

I found a dealer 300 miles away with a brand new 2008 4 door rabbit on the lot. I had a family member look at the car and take it for a drive and he said that everything seemed fine. So, here's my question: Would you buy a car that has been rotting on a car lot for 2 years? My wife isn't thrilled at the prospect of buying a new car that is 2 years old.

It's black (not my color of choice, and I think that I may regret the color after a year or 2 of scratches) has a sunroof, steel wheels, and 100 miles on the odometer. The dealer is asking $16,990. Should I go for it if I can get it for $16k?

This is killn' me. It's midnight and I can't sleep...

I think 16,990 is to much for a car that is 2yrs old and been sitting on the lot. The MK6 will be here soon, so your dealer should want to unload it ASAP.
Throw him a lowball offer and work him from that. I work for a dealer and we just sold an 08 for 15,250 w/1600 mi on it. It had more miles than the one your looking at but at least it was driven once in a while. If you decide to get it make them check the battery, brake rotors(rusty?),etc. They should have a whole pile of 30 day inspections that will provide you with peace of mind that the car was taken care of while waiting for its new owner. The black ones always seem to hang around longer, I wonder why? The one we sold was black too.

Thanks for the help. They don't seem to want to bugde on the price, but I'll have to put the screws to them.

i just bought my 09 last week and it was only 1k more expensive then that. that's including the awesome rims that i made the salesperson give me. so if your looking at that 08 why don't you just go for an 09 and choose the color that you do want?

just lay down the lay on the price, they want it gone, and they'd rather sell it for 15k rather than not sell it at all, you can make it seem like if you arent hopping on that deal, then they wont have time to sell it off before mk6. Also, i got a 2 door 06 back in 07 with 600 miles on it for 12.5k....wtf? also, get a carfax, they should show what they did on the routine check-up (right?)

If they don't want to deal, walk away. I agree with everyone, make a deal on an 09. For the money you'll be spending on the 08 you could walk out with an 09 in the color you want and make the wife happy. CarFax won't help you on this one. VW doesn't report 30 day inspections, esp. for cars that are not sold. Hell CarFax dosen't even show my 08 Rabbit as being totaled in January! They say its clean!!! WTF???

I told them that I'd take the car for $15,500. They don't want to sell it for that price, so I am moving on.

What's the best price available for a 09 4-Door Rabbit with a sunroof and alloys that any of you have come across recently. The clock's ticking until the Mk6 rolls onto our shores...

I live in Idaho. I've checked dealers within 400 miles of my home, and none of them are any where close to the prices you're quoting. The best deal I have found on a 4-door is $19,000. Maybe the Cash for Clunkers program has jacked up the prices on everything...
