    Painting of Brake Calipers

    Painting of Rabbit Brake Calipers
Painted all 4 brake calipers red on my Rabbit Sport with the Duplicolour Caliper Kit. They turned out great. 2 generous coats per caliper was sufficient. I highly recomment using the Duplicolour Kit as the finished product looks like a powder coat.

This is the most simple mod to do to your rabbit. Took me about 4-5 hours to complete with a helping hand. Once your tires are off and the car is on axle stands, clean the calipers thoroughly with the degreaser provided in the kit. If you have a brush on hand, use it to scrub each rotor.

Taping is the most important part as you do not want to get any paint on the lines or on your rotors. Having an extra roll of masking tape on top of the one provided in the kit wouldn't be a bad idea. Make sure to remove the tape when the paint is still a little tacky. If you let the paint dry fully before removing the tape, you might risk taking some paint off with the tape. Just a general rule of thumb.

I decided the paint the full caliper and not only the sections that you see.
Once the calipers are fully dry, put your tires back on and the torque them. After you've put the tires back on, let the car sit for about 12 hours (overnight) before driving to be absolutely sure the paint is fully cured.

I suggest using a better quality paint brush than the one provided in the kit. The bristles dried up on me about half way through the second coat. See the pics below for the finished product.

I did this last week also. The duplicolor kit really makes it a an easy and cheap mod!

Just gotta let the car sit for a while afterward.

Yeah...It was a cheap mod and it looks great. My next mod will be installing a mesh grill, which will be inexpensive as well.

I did the same thing a month or so ago, but went with the C2 kit (got it from the tirerack) in a nice shade of blue...

Applied 2 full coats, with more product left than time... The "leftover" product solidified in the sealed can by the next morning (it is a high temp epoxy paint), so if anything needs re-touched, I'll have to get another kit. I left mine cure for 24 hrs before driving. Sure dresses it up nicely, and makes cleanup when washing a snap!

Do you guys think a paint shop would do this?
or would it be too much work for em?
I just dont have to time, and mainly the tools to paint mine. That and the fact that I KNOW my hands should never paint anything lol. How much do you think it woudl cost?

Hah i just did this on saturday as well using the duplicolor red paint kit. Turned out great. I am the most artisticly challenged person ever and I had no trouble painting this. It just takes time thats all. Getting it done would be triple the price so it isn't as worthwhile.

If you get it done at a paint shop, they might charge you an arm and a leg for labour.

Has anyone had any flaking or cracking after using this kit? It hasn't happened to me so far, but just wondering if its happened to anyone else.

Also, is it safe to scrub the caliper when cleaning your rims or will it damage the paint? Or should you avoid going near the caliper with a rougher cleaning utensil.

    Correction...It WILL flake.

Mine did. But I know why. When you're washing your car after driving it, your brake calipers are VERY hot. Using cold water to wash the rims/fenders can literally make the paint JUMP off the caliper. I have a few chips just because of that very reason.

Make sure you let your brakes cool down before washing the rims, or avoid getting the calipers wet at all while they're still hot.

Should be able to get some smallish jack stands from walmart/autozone/etc for about $20 per pair.

I would think if you degreased them real well it would not flake off. I think more time will tell.

Can anyone post up other colors, red looks great but i WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BLUE AS WELL.

looks good, not sure if its worth it unless you have pretty open rims IMO (i.e. not magny's or similar)
