I am having several problems with my 84 volkswagen rabbit convertible wolfsburg edition. First off one of the pulleys is stopping one of the belts sometimes, which makes me think one of them is freezing up. The power steering pump making a horrible sound when I turn and there is a sound coming from around there that falls and rises with the rpms. It also will run hot making me think the water pump is going out but I can't figure out how to take the belt off around the power steering pump, I loosened the tensioner bolt but the bloody thing won't budge, and I can't find where else to loosen it. Another thing is my fan won't work on speeds 1-3 which must be the resistor pack but how do you get to it in an 84? I tried taking out the dash box and that wasn't coming out. Another thing is the e-brake broke on one side but how do you replace it? Where do you loosen it to get it out? Underneath it looks like one metal line running to the wheel without any adjuster between the handle and the wheel. Lol I bought this car to save me money and it turned out to be a money pig. detailed info on any of this would be very helpful, thanks.

Which pulley are you talking about there can be a few of them.
The power steering pump making a horrible sound when I turn and there is a sound coming from around there that falls and rises with the rpms.

This is a sign that you are low on fluid in the res. The squeel is because you are lock to lock or empty on fluid. You can use Dextron III in the res, and if you want to improve it a bit use Seafoam Automatic Transmission cleaner/sealer.
You have to untighted the tensioner bolt holder. Then there are 3 additional 10mm bolts that you have to loosen two are on the back of the pump, and then there is the pivot that is on the top side of the pump It is a pain, but you can see more by creating a login to www.thevagcat.com and look at the parts breakdown for it.

The blowers are pretty resiliant. To get to the resistor, you are under the hood of the car and in the fresh air plenum there are 2 screws under the passenger side that hold it and there are 2 screws and one bolt on the drivers side.
You need a real long phillips.
Once the cover is off you can then see the blower motor cover.
I would jump 12Vdc to the resistor to verify that the fan works. The usual problem is the switches go bad. You can take the switch off and find the 12vdc lead then using a jumper wire jump the switch plug.... if the Fan works then it is your switch, and you don't have to go any further.
At www.cabby-info.com Kams has a how to on the removal of it.
The e-brake broke on one side but how do you replace it? Where do you loosen it to get it out? Underneath it looks like one metal line running to the wheel without any adjuster between the handle and the wheel.
If the cable is broke then you shoudl buy 2 cables and replace the rear wheel bearings/seals/brake Cylinders, and shoes on both sides and be done with the brakes for a few years. The Cables attach to a lever on the rear shoe, then enters the cabin of the car right behind the e-brake handle from under neath.

That is a too uncommon mistake. These cars are durable and dependable but it all is a maintenance thing. Once you get it all fixed and running correctly it will service you for a good long while.
I have had a diesel rabbit for 20 years before I sold it, and I currently have a 93, and a 92 cabby that are dailey drivers.... It takes a while to get them that way.... but I think it is worth it.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee and Cars all have in common?
They all Start with good GROUNDS.
Replace all of them that you can, 99 percent of flakiness will disappear.
92, 93 Cabriolet.... 89, and 90 are Deceased.
Power steering fluid filled to the max in the res., all the fluids are up, but I couldn't tell which pulley it was, so I was trying to take the belt off too see which pulley wasn't spinning freely. It also spits up powersteering fluid sometimes. Also your www.thevagcat.com link doesn't work or the site is down. But thanks for the info I was wondering if it was just me or it was a pain to get to those 10 mm bolts ( why did they make it that way lol ). Anyway thanks for the help
It is spitting because the res is too full.
and sorry www.vagcat.com
