    2009 Volkswagen Rabbit knock

I just purchased a 2009 VW Rabbit (manual) and I'm starting to notice something and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the "problem". When I start up the car and pull out of the parking and then stop for a minute I hear this distinct knocking noise coming (it seems) from the right rear area. It only happens when I start the car and after I pull off and have to stop. After driving for a while I don't hear it although on one or two occasions I did hear it after I had been driving for a bit. I only hear it when I have stopped at a light. Is it a pump, fuel line? Is this a normal for this car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Normal. Leak detection pump. It's pumping air into your gas tank to check for leaks in the fuel line.

I'll let someone else come in and lecture about searching, I'm too tired to.

    Thank you!!

At least you're giving me some kind of idea of what may be going on so that when I take it to the service shop I can say something besides, "it makes a knocking nosie".

Usually you'll say "it makes a knocking" noise and they'll know what the problem is. And yes, DJ is right, I have the same thing happening with my car and it's no biggy.

And that's why there is no reason to take it to the dealer

    Thanks,

Hmmmm...I just took my car in for the 90 day courtesy check and told them about the sound and they said they couldn't hear it and let me go. Today I got the f/up call asking how everything went and I was asked to bring it in so that they could check and see if they could duplicate the sound. If this is common in Rabbits what is the point of my bringing it in again. I was just going to live with until I received the call asking me to stop by again. It's confusing.

I personally would not take it in since you know what the noise is but if it gives you peace of mind bring it in. They will probably just tell you the same thing we did. All our cars make the same noise.

    Welcome to the ROC.

If you wanna be more specific... the sound usually occurs when you start up the car and it's still cold. It goes away after it warms up, that's why they couldn't duplicate the sound (I would think)

    Bunny:

You're right! I told them that when I took it in for the check up but...you know how could I possibly know what I was talking about. I only mentioned it then because I figured what the heck since I'm here. I had read something here a while back about a pump that made me okay with the sound but after that visit I wasnt so sure anymore. I'm going to leave it alone. I'm not having any other problems and based on all of your posts this is not a problem either.

    Thanks!

Heheh no problem ! Enjoy the car !

I wish I would have gotten manual, but in LA it would be a bit problematic

I live in Chicago and it is problematic but I wanted one anyway because I just loving having that control. In heavy traffic it can get a little bit tiring but give me a full stretch of road and it's ON!
