I'm getting some weird sounds coming from the engine bay so I'm trying to rule out a dirty air filter. I hope that's the problem.
Every time I hit about 3K RPM the engine sounds a little strained where it would normally sound very nice and growly. It could just be me being paranoid/ delusional though. It can happen from time to time 0.o

Here’s my experience with a Short Air Intake.
I have a 2006 Rabbit 2.5L inline5 at ~ 83,000 miles. (MAF sensor and air intake temperature sensor).
I installed a NEUSPEEd air intake from here:
http://www.neuspeed.com/651080-neusp...ntake-kit.html
Even though Neuspeed says this will not produce any CEL-s, this intake threw a CEL almost immediately, it would go away with a battery disconnect but would come back in 50-100 miles of driving.
AutoZone scan gave me this error code:
-------------
OEM Number for cross : P0068 -- Definition: Throttle position and engine load do not agree
Explanation:
The ECM detected that the TPS value and engine lead do not agree with the expected TPS value and engine load.
I found a DIY for the MAF insert (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4189770 ), I made it and installed it. I ended up spraying a bit of adhesive on one side of the outside lip of the insert just to prevent it from moving or vibrating (it was a bit lose inside the MAF body).
I can feel a difference in driving with the MAF insert. Before (when CEL was on) the car seemed more aggressive. With the insert, the car feels and handles more like "stock", a bit less responsive but smoother. Didn't expect to notice such a difference.
Thank you to the community for all the help I got solving this issue.
^^ but now you can drive at ease knowing that it is running within specs and nothing is getting damaged. glad to see you got it taken care of...

I installed my Neuspeed intake tonight. It went very smoothly and the pictures / instructions that come with it make it very simple to install. I did the MAF insert as well thanks to the DIY instructions so I don't expect to have any CEL issues.
Took it for a quick spin and it sure does growl nicely around 4K

does anyone care to post their intake temperature readings? i want to see the differentials from ambient temps to intake manifold temps. perhaps give the readings at idle, then cruising at 60mph.
any participation is greatly appreciated.
also, it would be nice to know what the stock air box temps allow the intake temperatures to be. just to know what the baseline is. but, i threw my stock filter away, so that's not going to happen.
forgot to do the idle readings, but here is the 60mph (cruise control) read, 14.4°F difference:

I'll post for my monstrosity as soon as I get my VAGCOM cable back from my parents.

thanks, man.
if I had to guess, I would say the carbonios would come in with better results.
I'm just curious as to how much of a difference they make on our engines. the stock air box actually got the freshest air location to pull from. I think the cais pull from a location that is susceptible to expanding and escaping engine heat being forced down the fender wells.
also, I'll get an idle reading today.

Well mine right now is a custom ultra short intake made for the SRI manifold. You got me thinking of 2.5s I can test with my old Carbonio equipment though... anyhow. It hit me last night, my parents are the ones who borrowed my VAGCOM for their completely stock 2.5 jetta. I'm about 90% sure I can convince them to do the idle baseline and 65% that I can get them to do a 60mph run for a baseline.

your parents use vagcom? now i feel really lame, hah hah.
that would be cool though. the main thing is to do the idle test after a short drive. you know, to get the heat equilibrium under the hood. then park and scan at idle. this is why i forgot last night. when i arrived at the house, hungry as ever and it was the last thing on my mind. even this morning i was going to do so when i got to work; forgot. the elm is still plugged in from yesterday.
wouldn't it be silly if the cais were only a ~2% cooler than the stock air box at highway speeds (on our vehicles)?

Yea, while I like the look of the BSH, that tube gets pretty darn warm, I don't think the carbonio got that warm.
Keep in mind stock intake could inlet air from the engine bay as well.

i recall the first cai i made getting extremely warm, mainly because it was segmented. there was no heatsink affect to dissipate between the aluminum pieces. now, being one piece, it seems to run a lot cooler.
give some numbers for your bsh if you don't mind. also, would you think your bsh would be cooler if you had a white painted surface or reflective coating? that's a physics question that i can't answer. however, it would seem logical that white paint would reflect heat (even if the heat was not in the form of light). also, all those black silicone connections that i used to have, i wonder if they were absorbing/retaining and distributing heat to their aluminum neighbors. perhaps dj can help with hot and cold discussion
very true, but it is still allowed to retrieve fresh air that is forced at it...

finally remembered to do it when i pulled into the garage this morning:
46.8°F difference from ambient temperature
36.0°F difference from cruising intake temperature

i too put one of those in (can't tell you if it made a difference though):
edit: crap, it has already been a year since i installed that filter. i should clean it, or buy another to swap it out.
edit2: also, i don't buy the 20 tq results. something a little funny about those numbers...

i just don't believe that it could be accomplished with the takeda cai alone (as it was shown on the dyno snapshot).
also, the description on ecs reads: "The AFE Takeda Attack Intake is a true cold air intake system. In recent testing this intake produced seven horsepower and eight pound feet of torque", but shows 16hp/19tq on the dyno image.
i think this is true. also the 'bigger' filter seemed to tone down the growl a little.

Maybe that intake works extra well on our 2.5s??.. dont kno^^ .. Is growl a good thing? as far as performance
Have anyone heard of BSH Bulletproof Forged DV?? It takes up the boost? ... Do we even have boost on an NA engine??? I am confused.
http://www.dragtimes.com/2008-Volksw...res-17191.html I was familiar with our rabbit engine bay but after I saw this.....
Is this a turbo??

only a few people on this forum have boost on their rabbits. you need a turbo to have such. the rest (major majority) of us are NA...
