    Best year for early rabbit

I am considering buying a 77 rabbit gas that has 91 k. I am curious what the consensus is on this year rabbit. The reliability seems to be an issue. Does reliability increase in the 84 model year? The car seems clean I would like to use it as a daily driver and possibly do track days with it.

    thanks

All early rabbits are good, and can be reliable. You have to take care and go through each system at a time and replace, clean and re-use parts.

    Suspension
    Engine
    Transmission
    Exterior
    Interior
    Cooling
    HVAC
    Fuel
    Brakes

All can seem daunting at first but they really are a simple thing.

One rule of thumb, if you are doing the brakes, don't go for the 10 dollar rotor, as that is cheap steel. If you are doing the back, do the wheel cylinders as well as the bearings. (one less headache). Remember the braking system is the number one SAFETY feature of the car, how cheap do you value your life.

The latter Golfs may look like a rabbit, but they ain't a rabbit...... MK1's Rule.
save for the CIS ones which are from the Devil.

On the rust issue check the winshield rubber seal for gaps at top or rust on lower portion, also check the front strut towers for cracks or separation.
