Hi I have a beetle with the engine code SFADR, could anyone help with what size this is thanks, it's in a 68 beetle

Only two of those letters contains the engine code...

It's 1500 or 1600...

The first two letters do not correspond with any two digit engine
code that I see.


Type 1 Code - Year -Engine – Remarks

So, you got "SFADR" off the engine, as shown in the picture?

SF is the prefix for South African built engines.
AD 1971-73 1600cc 50bhp DIN. Non-USA.

Not sure what the "R" is, unless it means replacement case, which usually means Brazilian or
Mexican universal cases. Mexican cases usually have "Hecho en Mexico" cast below the distributor.
Universal cases all have an oval shaped blank plate covering a hole at the bottom right rear (FIF)
of the engine.
