    1981 rabbit pickup very slow

hi, i just bought a 1981 rabbit pickup diesel 5 speed. starts up great even when cold. when i try to drive it i cant get it to faster than 30 mph(it takes a long time to get there). its been sitting awhile not sure how long. put fresh fuel in(with some 911 diesel) new fuel filter bleed the lines at the injectors. its way more sluggish than it should be. any help would be great!!!!

Moved your thread to the older rabbit forum.

I would suspect that your Injection pump timing is off.
To set it you will need a Haynes Manual or the better one a Bentley.
It is possible that the Injection Pump needs a rebuild, as it isn't sucking the fuel as it is supposed to, or that the
    Timing of it is off.

To set the timing you will need a Dial gauge. There will be others along to add to this.
Is your air cleaner been changed and was it soaked with oil?

Do you have a Clean line from the filter to the IP?
Are there air bubbles in the line as you are running the engine, and if you manually operate the throttle cable from
under the hood does the engine throttle up evenly and fast, or does it creep up?
What do Divorces, Great Coffee and Cars all have in common?
They all Start with good GROUNDS.
Replace all of them that you can, 99 percent of flakiness will disappear.

air cleaner has some oil but not enough to be a problem. the are some air bubbles in the line cant seem to get them out. when i hit the throttle under the hood it revs quickly as it should just no power under load. wouldn't be apposed to take it to someone it MN just dont know anyone.

When you rev it is there smoke out the tail pipe?
I would suspect a clutch issue, as in Slipping possibly, but getting the time on the ip correctly is the first step.
On the bellhousing of the Tranny is a 2 or 3 letter /number code ie: tna, tj, ,,,,,, it is possibly that you have a Gasser Tranny in it, and not a Diesel.
Which direction are the air bubbles moving from filter to ip or when the engine is turned off is it from the ip to the filter or still filter to ip?

When you replace the filter did you break the lines at the top loose?
