1984 Volkswagon Rabbit die immediatly after start

I have a 1984 Rabbit and it sat for about a year and a half. I was able to get started and drive it home. It ran fine. A few days later I went to start it and it would start but won't idle and when I give it some gas it dies.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks Randy

Sounds like it is working off the 5th injector...but the other 4 are sadly out of sorts.
    Check for vacuum leaks.
    Check for your timing.
If it sat for a while, then I would be replacing the fuel filter.
check www.cabby-info.com as there is a wealth of information on the CIS injection system.
You didn't state which engine you have CIS or Diesel.
Full-size Spare Tire, or Space Saver?
Could be a stuck air-plate plunger....

Not as CIS savy as I don't own one, but I have read of folks issues alot.

Moving your thread to the proper older Rabbit forum.

Check your fuel pump relay. If the car sat in the rain and has a leaky windshield, water often reaches the fuse/relay box and corrupts this relay. Another relay that seems to catch water from a leaky windshield is the intermittent wiper relay. WD40 usually helps clean out the socket on the fuse box that the relay plugs into, but these relays usually will take in water and may or may not work after you drain the water out.

Thank for your responses. I found the issue to be a short in the ignition switch. Once its starts and the starter is released, the ignition switch would shut down engine. I can wiggle the wire connection to the switch and the engine will stay running.
