I see that the power steering line is obstructing clean access to the 5-speed tranny fill plug. Asking those who've changed the transmission fluid, which type 17 mm hex socket worked best for you? Stubby, long, or slim?

Per the link:

You will need a 17mm allen wrench (the top of one of your lug nuts will fit perfectly in there and leave enough room for you to fit a 17mm wrench on it to turn) silverGTI used a cut off piece of a 17mm allen and a 17mm socket to torque the drain plug to the correct number).
Sounds like a stubby 17 mm hex socket will work. The one I have is about a 3/4 inch too long to fit a ratchet on behind the P/S tube. Maybe a long slim socket is better, because it might fit past the P/Line. I guess there's only on way to find out. One can never buy enough tools.

Did you look at the pictures? He had to loosen the one bolt that holds the PS
cooling loop in place so he could move it out of the way.

However, the "L" allen wrench should go into the hole, and rub a little
on the line, and you can use a wrench to turn the allen wrench. Loosening
up the loop by taking out that bolt will also help, a lot.
