Re: 2003 jetta tdi
Did you unplug the O2 sensors before welding? If you used a TIG welder,
or MIG welder, they ground to the exhaust, right? The O2 sensors are wired
directly to the ECU and are very sensitive to shorts and voltage spikes,
they fry the ECU. When they went with the drive-by-wire, the O2 sensors
also wire through that system, and the ECU. This is the worst case scenario.
I would first check all the fuses for any blown ones, it has been known to happen,
especially if you welded with the battery still connected. You should never
weld without disconnecting the battery. ECUs do not like any type of welder...
If your weld ground isn't good, that voltage travels through as voltage spikes, especially
with the battery still connected. If you did NOT ground the welder at all, well, then
there you go... The metal has to be CLEAN, and the ground placed as close as possible to
the area you are welding.
It also depends on the welder. TIG welders have a high frequency that destroys ECUs.
MIGs don't have that same high frequency, thus MIG is safer. Muffler shops don't
disconnect the battery when they do exhaust work, but they use MIG welding machines,
or they should. Some also use a surge protector they hook up to 12V and ground. If
the TIG welder is a DC welder, that frequency is only there for a split second.
OR, it could be when you changed the P/S line you pulled a harness out, or broke a wire.
