2012 Tiguan TDI 140 Broken Turbo

Hi, I'm new to this Forum and are looking for some advice on my wife's 2012 Tiguan which went into limp mode last week. My wife said there was a loud whooshing noise before losing power. The RAC were called and the code showed low boost. From the whooshing noise I suspected a loose, or damaged hose. I put the car over a pit and all hoses seemed OK. I drove it to a local independent VW garage who diagnosed a failed Turbo. Apparently pieces of metal had broken away and entered the cat. The total repair bill quoted is 1065 +vat, which is for labour, new genuine turbo, new hose, oil flush and new oil. I am obviously annoyed as the car was only 4 years old in November, has full history and has only covered 52k miles. I spoke to VW UK Customer Services who said that since last year (last week) they no longer offer good will payments for repairs outside of Warranty and that any contribution would have to come from the local dealer VW Crewe. Crewe are not interested in paying as the car is outside warranty. Does anyone have any ideas why the exhaust side of the turbo would blow after 4yrs and 52k. There has never been any smoking, or lack of power before. Also does anyone think it's worthwhile pushing VW? I am planning on getting the car fixed by the independent. Thanks Spen

Isn't power train covered 5/50? Bumper to Bumper is 3/36.

I was told, with my TDI, the Turbo was covered under the powertrain
    warranty.

    Engine

    • Engine block and cylinder heads and all internally lubricated parts including pistons, piston rings, pins and cylinder sleeves
    • Crankshaft, pulley, main bearings, caps and bolts
    • Connecting rods, rod bearings, caps and bolts
    • Camshaft(s), camshaft bearings, buttons and plugs
    • Timing gears and timing chain or belt
    • Rocker arms, rocker arm pivots, shafts and bushings
    • Intake and exhaust valves, springs, guides, adjusters, retainers and seats
    • Pushrods and lifters
    • Intake manifold
    • Exhaust manifolds
    • Balance shaft
    • Water pump
    • Fuel pump
    • Thermostat
    • Oil pump, cover, gears, pressure relief valve and screen
    • Rotor housing, rotors, shims and silent shaft
    • All internal fasteners, nuts and bolts
    • Turbocharger/supercharger assembly including boost valve and wastegate
    • Seals and gaskets
When I bought mine, it still had the balance of the 3/36, they added more due to it being certified used, but they said powertrain was 5/50

Thanks for your response. I have checked and mine is 60k, or 3 yrs which unfortunately puts me back into needing a goodwill gesture from a main dealer I have never used. I would be interested if anyone had an idea why a newish turbo with low miles should let go. I would like to ensure it doesn't happen again. It has full history and was last serviced by independent VW garage 4K ago in May.

Re: 2012 Tiguan TDI 140 Broken Turbo

Mine has lasted, so far, 230,000 miles, I use 5W40 oil, and have been since day one.
Also using DELO400, or Rotella T6, cheap diesel motor oil, and as I said, 230,000
    miles later, still running strong.

For some reason though, with Rotella, my catch can fills up fast, and does
not fill at all with the Delo400, so I have been sticking with the Delo400.

Turbos are manufactured the same as any other part, and some just
go bad faster than others. Most of the time, it's lubrication, it only
takes one time for oil to not reach a hot turbo for it to fail. There
is no rhyme or reason yours lasted 52,000 while mine is over 230,000
miles... It's just the way it goes... My warranty was up in six
months with the miles I rack up...

Thanks, I have asked the garage to flush through the oil and fit new oil feed pipes. I will check what viscosity oil they are using. Think it will be as per VW's recommendations.

Re: 2012 Tiguan TDI 140 Broken Turbo

VWs is 5W30, same as what mine should be using, but I use 5W40 Diesel motor oil,
the DELO400, I am done with Rotella due to how it mists too much and fills the
catch can almost twice between oil changes. I get nothing in the catch with Delo400,
but I have vented the catch since, but, the consumption has gone down considerably
with the Delo400 over the Rotella T6.

My DPF is cracked, so I can use those oils, they are a low saps oil, just not
VW's Low SAPS 5W30 507.00 certification. I have been using it since I got it,
with 32k on it. I change the oil every 5-6 weeks... 5W40 is perfectly safe
for any TDI motor, just not DPF approved for VW.
