    Adding a new key

I have a MY 2000 Jetta GLX and would like to add one more key in addition to the two I already have. I have a newly cut key and a new RFID chip.

I know I can retrieve the SKC with Vag-tacho and I can program the chip to the car (or vice versa?) with VCDS.

    I have two questions:

    1. In order to add a third key to the two functioning ones, do I need to program all three keys, or just the the new one?

    2. What gets programmed, the car to the key, or the key to the car?

    Re: Adding a new key

You will need Vag-Key or dealer to program the IMMO. You can do the remote functions:

Programing the button REMOTE portion of the key is simple.
You do need 2 keys. You must be able to lock the drivers door and have the red led alarm light next to the lock button blink. If it does not blink, the alarm does not know the door is closed and will not go into program mode. Put one key in the ignition switch, turn on, do not start engine. Close the door, use 2nd key, turn door lock and hold in lock position for 10 seconds. Release key to neutral position. Press a button on the remote, within 2 seconds press the same button again, the turn signal lights will flash,
this indicates your remote matches the car system and is now recognized. Unlock door remove key from ignition.
So don't pay extra 99 cents to $5 for these instructions in hopes of getting the KEY to function with the car.
Instructions are only for the keyless remote, not the key.

Not sure you can use VCDS to do the IMMO. I read Vag-Key or Dealer...

    Re: Adding a new key

    Thanks, but my questions were:

    1. In order to add a third key to the two functioning ones, do I need to program all three keys, or just the the new one?

    2. What gets programmed, the car to the key, or the key to the car?

    Found the answers:

    1. According to ross-tech:And from ross-tech:

The "Stored Value" is the number of keys currently matched.
Enter a "new value" corresponding to the total number of keys to be matched, including any existing keys.
Any old keys are automatically being cleared. All keys, including existing keys, must be matched at the same time.

    2. According to haakey.com, the car is programmed to they keys and not the other way around.
