Question Passat trouble! 1.8t Smoke ?Turbo?

I normally work on my rabbit but picked up this project to get more into turbos. its a 2001 and blows a ton of smoke more as it warms up its grey sometimes white or even small amounts of blue(does not smell sweet ever).my coolant looks good well besides someone mixing the red and green in there, cleaned that out and its working fine, the oil i'm flushing right now because its sludge like but the engine sounds great and it revs good as far as i know so i believe the turbo has an issue with leaking into the exhaust or intake side, could just be all the seals are gone on it as well or turbine or the bearings.

so far i plan on replacing turbo wondering if that would be the right thing to do.

    (sorry about the novel)

Thanks for everyone's input this forum are the best thing ever!

I think Turbo ya. The turbo is cooled and lubricated by oil and antifreeze, so alternating smoke colors seems consistent with bad seals.

If the oil is sludged you will want to clean out the oil feed and return lines for the turbo as well.

oil could be getting past your piston rings too.

just something to keep in mind.

welcome to the VWOC. keep us posted on what you find.

Re: Passat trouble! 1.8t Smoke ?Turbo?

Last night at 1 in the morning i was ready to turn key and now there is still smoke looks white (no smell) but there is never a hint of blue in it ever like before and the car actually feels like its got power.

The old turbo had play in it and made a clunking sound when pressing it back and froth, it would resonate through the oil return line and the waste gate felt easy to open compared to the other.

plan on doing a compression test on it later but an odd thing while i was taking the turbo out the air pump pipe when taking it off had coolant in it what would be the reason for that?

What is the next steps to see if its a crank in the wall, head gasket, or piston rings?

Wanted to share the good news the other day my brother came over and wanted to see how it was coming along started it up and smoked horribly but after 2 minutes stopped let it ran another 20 minutes and not a hint of smoke i guess it was burning off the coolant that might have poured into the compression hose to the intercooler when i fiddling with pulling out the turbo!! so all good news now

That is great news! Another 1.8T saved! Is it a manual as well?

    Hope the rest goes smoothly.
