Passat LED rear lights failure
I have just had to replace both sets of tail lights in our 2009 Passat because about a third of the both the brake and indicator LEDs stopped working. I am shocked by this as they are pretty damn expensive and LEDs are supposed to be long lasting.
Both sides had failed so it was a big bill.
I did break the lights apart to see what caused it and it seems one side had a problem in the LED driver circuit which made it get hot, and the other side appeared to be a dry joint, so possibly both were production faults in manufacture of the PCB.
Anyone else had this?
Re: Passat LED rear lights failure
It is usually due to a moisture getting in somehow, causing shorts & corrosion.
You may want to use standard tails, cheaper, and put LED bulbs in. I have LED bulbs
in my 2013 Jetta TDI Tails, they've been fine for almost a year. I saw the price of
factory LED tails, I'll pass...
LED doesn't mean longevity, they're more prone to failure than incandescent.
The manufacturing process for LEDs is crucial, and one of the other reasons
they fail; heat during assembly taking hours and hours off the life of the LED.
